Headed there with our RV on Thursday for 4 nights. I know the park sits on the "original" channel of the Colorado River at its confluence with the Gulf of Mexico but is there any freshwater at all in that channel or is it all salt/brackish? I believe they have one or two fishing piers on the river channel and one on the Gulf. Any fishing tips for that location or nearby? Haven't really done much fishing in the salt, only charter boat type outings.

I fished on the bank of the river about 200 yards in from the coast a couple of years ago and caught a good amount of fish just using shrimp.

Should be pretty salty unless the Colorado is flowing a bunch of fresh water (I don't think it is right now).

There's a pier in the river mouth, a pier at the jetties, the jetties themselves, and the beach itself for fishing location options.

I think the pier at the mouth has lights. Live shrimp under a cork at night if you're looking for specs.

If you just want something to fry up... Try for whiting, or drum. I'd hit the surf if you have 4x4 and stick to the jetties if you in a 2 wheel drive.

Look on LCRA's website to see what the flow rates and salinity are - the Colorado hasn't had the flooding that the Brazos has had, but it's been flowing high for a while now. There was a thread a while back talking about how the bay salinity levels were really low because of the releases from the Highland Lakes and all of the rain we've had down here.

No 4x4 so we'll most likely stick to the piers, jetties and river channel shoreline.

Thanks for the input.

I just got back from my families house on the Colorado in Matagorda. I'd have to say that it is rolling fresh right now as it was still extremely high and moving out fast with a pure mid color to it. West bay is silted in with only super skinny boats having no issues. If your gunna fish the river any where south of the locks it will be brackish. But will have a heavy lean towards the fresh side.
