Here is my issue, I have a Savage Hog Hunter .308. it comes with iron sights and a threaded barrel. I paln on shooting it suppressed and I would like to be able to shoot a deer at 300 yards supersonic or a hog at 60 yards subsonic. it would be nice to have an illuminated reticle in case a hog comes in at last light, but not 100% necessary. Budget around $500-$600. I don't really want to spend more for optics on a $475 gun. Go..

With that spread I'd look at something with target style turrets so you can set zero then adjust to a known dope from there. Depending on how much magnification you're comfortable with at 300yds. At that price point I'm not sure you get something that perfectly fits those specs with illumination. If you stretch your budget this would get you pretty damn close to what you want.

I think I have settled on this one. 3x-9x with the Firedot Ballistic Reticle. I think it will suit this rifle well

Or try this, no illumination, but after looking at what you're leaning towards this might be a better fit with the auto zero turrets.

They also make this one with the SuperSub reticle, but with lower magnification and no lume

Don't know...

That's set up for 300blk, not 308. But if you're just after the magnification and go the zero->known dope route, I don't see why that wouldn't work as well.

Hey Eagle Earl, looking at the Leupold scope you posted v. the one I posted, the difference sems to be the turrets and the reticle ( althought they both have ballistic reticles). Is the zeroing turret worth an extra $50? What is the value of that?

Yours has adjustments under caps that usually don't have a way to reliably mark where you started from, or a zero. One with the target turrets lets you sight it in and get where you like it, then remove the indexed cap and reposition it to "zero". Once you know where your zero is, then you simply sight it in for each different load you plan to use and keep track of how far you move from zero to get it sighted in.

ETA- for an extra $50? Yes, worth every penny.
