Is there such a thing? A group of friends want to go camping out 30-50 miles off the gulf. I know there's homes out along the intercoastal but camping islands?

Are you possibly talking about a spoil island in the bay? If so, there are many - although 50 miles seems like a long way. From Port Mansfield, you would hit the Land Cut to the North, or S Padre to the South within 50 miles.

Could they be talking about camping on the beachfront?

Yep. I'm not sure. Looking at the map, maybe these guys are talking about sleeping on the padre island beach. Why make it sound like doing an episode of naked and afraid?

Two types of "islands" out that far...

1. Oil platforms (50ish miles out of mansfield the only one I can imagine is Perdido).
2. The boat you rode out on.

The platforms attract fish, so it's common to overnight at them. Basically "camping" on a boat.

Edit:
I was off by half on Perdido (floater) is 100+ miles out from Mansfield.

There are some fixed jacket platforms out there though. Usually in 100-200 ft of water.

So true. We were skim boarding with a ski rope behind a jeep up North of most of the crowds. This older fellow in a bronco sped by us and abruptly stopped a few miles up the beach. He looked like he was waving his arms and jumping around. We thought maybe he had broken down or something...

Nope. He was getting into his birthday suit. He had waded out to where the water was ankle deep and plopped himself into one of those lowrider lawn chairs that's only a foot off the ground. Had a little cooler and a six pack of beers.

I had to bail from the skim board cause he cut off my line. My dad and cousin hauled ass around him in the jeep and just laughed at me as I had to walk past him to pick up the ski rope again. I didn't think it was hilarious like they did, there's some things you just can't unsee.

Yep. Been there.
