Had a chance to stop by the new Cabela's in League City yesterday afternoon. Has some Cabela's $$ burning a hole in my pocket. New fishing reel on the wish list. Want to add another Curado to the collection.

Overall, the store is nice and well laid out. Not too big.

Go over to the fishing reel section. Find the Curados. Start fishing through the stock looking for a 201 (left handed). Nope. Asked the sales associate. He checks system. Nope. Ok... How about a Chronarch? More money than I want to spend But that would work. Left Hand? Nope. Really? OK Now I'm mildly irritated How about a Citica Left hand? Nope. OK How about a Revo? Run through 4 or 5 models of the Revos they have on the display. Nope. Not a single "Left Hand" model.

/rant mode on/
Seriously?
Your store is located 20 miles from the coast and you don't stock a single left hand reel in at least 6 of the most popular inshore models?! Sales guy says I could order it online. What's the point in having a store if I have to order it online?.... If I wanted to order it online I would probably go through Amazon and get it at a cheaper price. For grins I stopped by FTU at 45/Beltway on the way back downtown. Had my choice of any of the Shimano inshore reels in left hand.Stopped by Academy.. In stock left hand model Curado, Chronarch, Citica...
Seriously?....

Cabela's ain't what it used to be (and they seem to be ok with that). They don't even respond if you complain and they don't stand behind their store brand products like they once did.

Lefties make up about 10% of the population. Smart retailers only stock products that have a high volume of sales. I'd argue those others stores are doing it wrong. Especially since you didn't buy from them

I used to make fun of my left handed cousin all the time.

Now I have a left handed son.

at what age did you figure that out?

I'm left handed but have never tried a left handed reel -- since you don't know what you don't know, if you never try you wont miss it ( or something like that )

I'm right handed and prefer to reel left handed. Hold the rod in my strongest handed. I'm amazed more people don't learn to reel the correct way.

I'm not worried about anything I'm fishing for taking my rod. I do get tired of reeling and I'm much more fluid with my strong hand.

My wife and daughter are left-handed. They're both crazy.

The funny thing is I'm right handed.
I throw, shoot, write with my right hand
I think that all y'all who are "right handed" are doing it wrong.

Explain to me how you "right handed" folks cast...(I've been in the boat with alot of you.... LOL)
1. Put rod in right hand
2. Push button to cast
3. Finish cast
4. Put rod in left hand to hold rod while you reel with right hand.

Amiright?

Since I'm "right handed" my right arm is stronger/more coordinated than my left.
I have much better control casting and power fighting the fish with my right arm.
All my left hand has to do is crank the reel.
I don't have to switch the rod from hand to hand to cast then reel.

I would argue all those "other" reels are left handed - I use the "right hand" model...

(Besides, its easy to find my rod/reels in the boat since they are "lefty" ones - and noone tries to use them...)

Lefthanded. Rarely buy left hand specific gear. Kills the resale value, and better to be adaptable.

Based on what activities? my kid is 18 months and does about everything with either hand.

I'm a lefty and I doubt my parents knew until I started writing.

I was a lefty until I broke my left arm in kindergarten. Then I switched to being a righty. I still eat left-handed, but almost everything else is with the right.

I write, throw, shoot, etc. left handed. But when it comes to something that uses specific equipment I have always gone right handed for availability:

Golf- right handed clubs
Bow- shoot right handed
long gun- shoot left but with a right handed model

Writing is the most intensive and highest dexterity requiring activity you will do. This is why that despite all activities it is viewed as one of the strongest indicator of handedness.

I'm right handed but reel lefty as well. Hate having to switch hands after I cast, feels awkward.

At 18 months he was hitting soft toss whiffle balls in the back yard. On his own he picked up a bat and correctly positioned his hands to hit left handed and would throw the ball left handed too. He still colored and did some other fine motor skills stuff with both hands, but would always start with his left hand until it got tired. Those were the main factors. Also, after a day of watching daddy shoot pistols we put a gave him a water gun, he would hold it up like he was shooting a real gun and be lined up with his left eye. Same for the first time I let him get behind his .22 Crickett, he just lined himself up that way. The eye thing is less concrete.

Also, when he was about 6 months old, if I put a shirt on him and he had free use of both arms, i.e. not supporting himself with one he would put his left arm through the sleeve first 99% of the time. His little brother used his right arm and is right handed. I know that is anecdotal at best, and my wife who is a pediatric therapist laughs at me about it, but I am not wrong in what I saw.

My wife will tell you that most kids don't pick that young and that studies show it isn't real concrete until about age 7 or so, but we haven't seen any sign of that and he is 5.

I'm pretty certain the crazy is more closely related to the fact that they're both women than what hand they write with.

I use left handed casting reels.

I feel your pain OP...however if none were on sale I wouldn't GAF anyway.

The new curado 70 is pretty nice, but no 6.2:1 option, just highspeed (boo, hiss).

If you pitch jigs it's even more of a win. Can set the hook and reel immediately.

I can reel and strip fly line left handed no problem, but trying to reel a baitcaster with any rhythm is impossible. Weird I know, but that is the way it is.

The product selection at not only Cabela's but Academy, Bass pro, and Gander Mountain as well is tragically inadequate. It's like they look for excuses for you to go shop elsewhere online.

Oh...and I'm a lefty. I cast with my left and reel with my right.

I'm still confused why people go to a brick and mortar store to buy anything.

Amazon Prime, Internet price matching and cheap shipping = shopping spree while sitting at home drinking a beer.

Hell the return policy is as easy on Amazon as it is Bass Pro.

Some things you just have to hold. I would never buy a guitar online untouched. Same with clothes, a bike, furniture.. on and on really.

To each their own I guess. Other than the guitar I have bought every one of those items online in the last 12 months.

I'm right-handed but I prefer a left-handed reel and I am not alone. this allows you to immediately start cranking without switching your hands around. If someone wants a left-handed reel then a big box store like cowbellys should have it.
fightingfarmer09

You could also buy a right handed reel that is more general population friendly and teach yourself to cast left handed. More than one way to skin a cat.
