How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'm going pond fishing near Bastrop in a couple of weeks and was looking to try some plastic frogs. The ponds are about 2-3 acres in size and have vegetation around the edges.

I've caught bass there before using plastic worms, topwater, spinner baits, but I thought a frog lure would be fun to try this time.

Any advice on brand, size, technique, etc. would be appreciated. Thanks.

Throwing a top water frog is my favorite thing in the world. I typically only use Zoom horny toads......I like watermelon/red pearl or bullfrog colors.

I would use the stiffest longest rod you have with some braided line. My success rate probably went up 25% after switching to braid.

I also had problems with setting the hook too soon.........waiting 1-2 seconds after the initial hit helped me out.

I couldnt find the video I wanted to attach, but skip to the 3:21 mark on this one.
It should get you excited about your upcoming trip.

had issues with another video i wanted to post about how to rig them......i just use a regular offset worm hook....will try one more time to attach

As a kid I used to use the Bill Plummer Superfrog.

It's a shame this bait is no longer made. A GIS brought back some good memories.

My favorite is the Scum Frog. Glides over anything, and bass love 'em. I used to cast directly into the weed line on the bank, and try to slowly sneak it back over weeds the whole way. Barely touched water until the inevitable explosion.

This is my favorite type of freshwater fishing ever. I prefer to use hollow body frogs, like scumfrogs, strike king, and express. The ponds have been on fire for yellow colored frogs down here around Del Rio.

Another type of frog bait to use are ribbits. It is a plastic lure with paddle tails for legs that you can T-rig and they are a blast to use as well.

Good luck on your trip!

Nothing funner in fresh water than dragging frogs over lily pads and watching them explode.

That is good old country fishing right there with the rubber frogs. We like to chunk them on the bank where possible. One good jump into the water, let it sit a second and boom. Fish on. Wait a few second to set the hook.

Don't look past topwater/weightless worms either.

A culprit worm either weightless with 2/0 hook can be murder.

This. Pond fishing for bass is one of my favorite things to do. Fished under the same circumstances, and basic methods, my personal preference was always a weightless Zoom trick worm over a frog bait. But that's just my choice. Can't go wrong either way. Good luck

In addition to the Superfrog, I used to catch the heck out of them on the Burke Frog, too.

I've started using this one on high pressure lakes for my topwater bite:

It's real easy to walk this bait and it gives you a different presentation than your normal frog.

I also love this one:

Happy frogging!

Also: if you're throwing a top water that always floats, have a back up rig with a soft plastic like the zoom toad. If (when) you miss a strike, toss the soft plastic frog in the same spot and let it sink for a sec. Some of the more experienced froggers here might have another option, but that worked for me when the Scum Frog wasn't sticking.

She's almost 24' low.......which is actually up from this time last year. I have fished choke my whole life and cant wait until the glory days return. If it ever comes up there will be endless cover for the fish. The last 4-5 "good" storms have just missed us and not really done anything in regards to filling her up. I am praying for another memorial day rain around Concan this year. The Frio's largest holes are still holding some water and it wouldn't take all that much to do some good. I'm wont be greedy and ask to fill it up, I want just enough so they open the south shore boat ramp back up.

Big fan of the ribbit frogs in ponds, if you use a screw in hook with less weight, you get a nice slow sinker
