Wife and I will be going there for a few days two weeks from now, first trip to this park. What are the must sees / must dos in and around the park? We're not very good at catching fish but we like trying (usually targeting catfish). Like to hike some but wife can't handle anything too strenuous or long. Will be taking mountain bikes but again she can't handle anything that's challenging at all (anything that's not mostly flat or close to it is challenging for her). We'll be taking care of food/cooking ourselves for the most part but if there is a killer BBQ place nearby that's always an attraction.

The part down by the river is very nice, with old stonework buildings and a great pecan and live oak grove. Then the bank slopes down to white limestone pebble banks. Depending on water levels, the river can be a trickle or a raging torrent, but usually it's about 30 to 50 feet wide and shallow with a few deeper pools, and the far side is a tall limestone cut bank. There are sunfish and bass, though the fishing pressure is heavy there. Small jigs resembling crawfish and small spinnerbaits will work. There are lots of good hiking trails though they are in more brushy area.

Don't go in the heat of the summer it turns into an SA cesspool of humanity. This time of year with it too cold to swim in the river you should have a good time. I'm not sure about the hiking and what not as I've only been out there once, even though it's only a 30min drive from my house.

My buddy and I took our families out there in the middle of the summer to play in the river and cool off. It was so packed we went as far up stream as possible to stay out of the budweiser runoff in the river. Right in the middle of the area we were in where probably 25 families with kids of all ages playing in the river these two fat lesbians start making out in the shallow area where the youngest kids are playing. Wow talk about questions to answer from my 4 yr old twins I was unprepared for. Anyway my buddy and I after asking them politely to go somewhere more private for their courtship got flipped off, called f'ing bigots and told not to judge them. So my buddy and I decided to embrace and celebrate their courageous display of freedom in sexuality and grabbed our lawn chairs and sat about a foot away from them and proceeded to critique their technique and offer suggestions as well as giving a play by play. After about 5 minutes of it they grabbed their crap and left.

So anyway, this time of year should be great, beautiful park when it's not over crowded. Hope you found this post helpful.

As far as BBQ about 15 miles south of the park on Blanco Rd is Choke Canyon BBQ. I can't say it's great as I'm biased and cook my own and hardly eat at any of the establishment's around SA. It's not Fraklin's or Lockhart's level of notoriety but it is one of the few around SA that actually tastes smoked and not oven cooked or boiled.

Here's the google map link Guadalupe State Park to Choke Canyon BBQ

If you go out east from the park on 46 after cross 281 you will find Antler Cafe, which is an area comfort food classic. Not BBQ but good food at good prices.

Here's the google map link Guadalupe State Park to Antlers Cafe

Choke Canyon doesn't have a website, but here is the link to Antler Cafe Antler Cafe

Wish I was more help, but after our experience we started taking the kids swimming and fishing up the road a little further to Blanco State Park and some of the Kendall County Parks around Comfort.

Also just across 281 on 46 is a Smokey Moe's. They have pretty good Q for a chain.

I live right next to it.

Go to Blanco SP. GSP is nice but gets totally overrun by San Antonio city dwellers "getting out."

Too late, we're committed to GRSP for this trip. Tell me about Blanco SP for future reference if you don't mind.

Reminds me of a creepy looking comedian that said he had an effective approach to make couples making out in public stop. He would just stare at them, smile, and say keep going.

Seriously though, stupid they thought you were asking them to stop because they were lesbians. The line "get a room" doesn't discriminate, apples to whoever or whatever that is doing stuff in public.

I used to work there and know the park very well and all the workers. What specific date will you be there?

http://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/guadalupe-river/park_events

On the events page, it lists the events that are offered. On the 30th, there's one at night that looks for frogs. That naturalist, Craig Hensley is really great and he will be leading it. he's fantastic with kids and still so knowledgeable and entertaining for adults. I recommend going to one of his events/programs. Also. there is a portion of the park that isn't necessarily attached to the main park, it's called the Bauer unit. You have to drive 10-15 minutes from the park to get there but it has hiking trails and people rarely ever use it. It's free to use, since you'll have your entry pass for grsp, also any other state park is free as long as your stay 28th-2nd
