How long do you want to ignore this user?
I know this board has a lot of people who have also given up smokeless tobacco. I love Copenhagen and had no plans or reason to give it up. However, I had a 24 hour stomach bug and I just haven't had a dip in six days now. My question is, why do I keep waking up at the same hours every night? I go to bed about 12am and I wake up at 1am and 4am every night now. I just can't figure out why.

I used to really have trouble going to sleep, but once I was asleep, I slept really well. Now, I go right to sleep, but don't sleep as well.

My grandpa does that too, but I think that's just because he's 86 and has to take a leak every few hours.

My infant wakes up like that too. Maybe you need a breast to suckle?

You'll get passed the physiologic addiction in 36-48 hrs. After that you're dealing with the psychological addiction ( dip after a meal, etc.)
Your sleep pattern shouldn't be affected.

From personal experience, I went through weird physical changes for about 2 weeks after dipping for 7yrs. Lost 8lbs in a week and gained 12 back the second week... Weird stuff. After that, it just became overcoming the mental cravings on long road trips, hunting, fishing, etc.

In your case, nicotine is a stimulant and can suppress your body's desire to go to bed but now that you don't have it you're falling asleep easier. Not sure why you're waking up.

Are you having to pee when you wake up? Without dipping you can change the amount of water your body retains due to changing sodium levels and decreased salivation (increased hydration).

Keep up the fight! After two weeks it just becomes a mental battle. You can do it!

I've dipped since I was 13 or so and I am now 35. Outside of waking up, it really hasn't been that hard. There was a tiny bit of brain fog and there have been times where I've snacked a little more or missed the Copenhagen due to the activity.

I really want to dip again, but it's nice being able to easily fall asleep now. Also, I think it would be a waste that I haven't needed a dip in six days and just to casually start again.

Thanks for all the advice. Nah, not having to pee. Just wake up, look at the clock and easily fall back asleep.

Never heard that as a side effect, except having snuff dreams that cause a sudden wake up in panic. Good for you on quitting. Change your mind set about snuff if you want it to stick. If you keep thinking it's awesome and you love it, you will go back. If you realize how dirty, smelly and Generally disgusting it is, as well carcinogenic, you will stay clean. Just this month I quit chewing my nails, which was the final holdover from cope. Now I am free and clear of tobacco, oral fixation, addiction, everything. It feels amazing. Good luck to you.

First of all, congrats on quitting.. Been quit over 2 years and the initial 2 weeks was hell for me... After 72 hours, all of the nicotine in your system is eliminated. But it began a bad phase for me, the head games began and the nic ***** beckoned me to put a dip in at every point... After about 10 days, I accepted the fact that dip was no longer going to be a part of my life and that I really didn't need it.. I accepted it, and took it one damn day... at a time (ODD).. I know there are those that can quit with no problems, but I was not part of that group.. Just stay vigilant, and hold not only yourself accountable, but get others you care about and who care about you involved... But ultimately, your quit is yours alone... Own it and stay quit oddaat.. That's what I do.

Something that helped me was sunflower seeds as I was used to spitting and having the chew in my cheek. Saw these the other day and seem like they would be similar. Quitting was one of the best decisions I have made.

If you're waking up like that first I'd check your caffeine intake followed by your alcohol intake. Caffeine can stay in your system for 6 hours pretty easy. You may be able to drink a coke and fall asleep no problem, but I guarantee that caffeine will mess with your sleep patterns. Same with alcohol, it will help you fall asleep but when you metabolize it it will actually wake you up some and keep you from deep sleep. No caffeine after 2pm, 1-2 drinks at dinner no later than 8pm.

Makes sense. I have been drinking a lot of unsweet tea the last few days. Finishing my last tea around 8 or 9pm. I do drink, but not during the days in question.

This, and take some benedryl for a couple of days. That will fix your right up...

Try no more tea for the rest of today or drink decaf ice tea. Decaf coffee still has a fair amount of caffeine in it. Give it a go for a few days and see.

Saw somewhere the half life of caffeine is 6 hrs, so those night time drinks may be the culprit.

I'm two plus years quit as well. Hardest thing Ive ever done in my life was quit nicotine. I still wrestle with wanting a dip, every, friggin' day. I was so addicted it's just unbelievable I ever quit (after 35 years of use). My sleep patterns have never been the same since I quit. I had a dip in my mouth basically 18 hours a day so all that stimulation was gone instantly so my body has been in turmoil ever since. I'd give my right nut for a dip. That's a really sad but true feeling. Stay away from dip and never go back once you've quit. That's my 2 cents.

I dipped for 18 years. Just did the math, Jesus what a waste. Been clean for severa years and don't miss it at all. Just got to change your internal representations.

I've battled being completely free of dip for almost 3 years now after dipping for a decade. I still have the random pinch. It's hell though. I want one right now...

Started at 17 quit at 49, also in health care, quit and feel better. Still Crave! But the upside is better as no heartburn, reflux and just feel better. It worked for me by taking a 2 week trip where I could not buy any. Believe me the pictures are real and you do not want your head cut on.

I quit 13 months ago, but chew on a cigar when I go hunting, it really is good and I don't crave it when the hunting is over.

I dipped for 28 years and when I quit I had a lot of strange side effects. I did have trouble going to sleep and I often woke up several times at night. I also had some problems with anxiety and constipation, of all things. I've been off of it for two years this month and still crave it occasionally and have even dreamed about it.

Overall, quitting was the best decision I ever made. I decided to quit for my wife and kids after my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer. Oddly enough around the same time a female friend of ours was diagnosed with mouth cancer. That helped to strengthen my resolve. Mouth cancer is horrible and disfiguring.

Good luck.

First and foremost, congrats on giving up the habit. It sounds like you are experiencing some withdrawal, which is fairly normal. If it gets to the point that you are on the verge of going back to the habit, you may want to try some nicotine patches, gum, etc. in the lowest dosage possible.
While some people pointed out the long half-life of caffeine, what is often forgotten is that a drug stays in your system until about 4 - 5 half-lives have been exhausted. Thus, that noon caffeine is 50% present at 4 pm, 25% present at 8 pm, and 12.5% present at midnight.

Formally, check out shuti.me or cbtforinsomnia.com for some formal help with regards to insomnia.

Otherwise, get some late afternoon or early evening exercise, have a light dinner without alcohol, take a warm bath or shower before bedtime, take 3 mg of melatonin about 3 hours before your intended bedtime, turn down all lights and (gasp) get off of Texags well before bedtime. Most importantly, let the wife know that she can do something to help you get to sleep as well!

Congrats again and best of luck.

I just passed my 4 year "start not dipping" anniversary. I didn't use Grinds, but I did use Hooch (basically chopped up herbs that you pinch like snuff). Some people advocate cold turkey, that didn't work for me, I needed something to wean myself down more gradually and this stuff worked like a champ.

I used the beef jerky snuff for the oral fix, nicorette gum and some prescription my Dr. Gave me. You take it for two weeks before quitting, then 2 weeks after for help controlling impulses.
