Will be spending some time there this summer on the way to a wedding in Estes Park (mid June). I know a lot of the trails won't be melted out so we won't do any aggressive hiking. Planning on whitewater rafting with Noah's ark and would like to fly fish.

Any recommendations on rivers or lakes?

I have caught trout like crazy off the bank right there at Noah's Ark. Stayed there and rafted with them for a school field trip with my son.

There are a lot of trails around town that you can hike- the snow will be long gone: Midland Bike Trail follows an old railroad trail (and is not necessarily a bike only trail) and there are tons of hiking and biking trails in the Buena Vista River Park.

Some of the higher elevation hiking may not have snow- depends on how much spring snow. BV is hot in the summer.

Twin Lakes was always a lightly fished lake. I always fished on the dam out there with rooster tails and would limit every time. This was when i was a kid and had no idea what i was doing

Depending on when you go in the summer, they could be thawed enough. Climbing Mt. Elbert is always a good story as it is the tallest in Colorado and a relatively easy hike. Probably a 5-6 mile round trip but nothing difficult anywhere on the hike

I used Noah's ark for rafting. It was a good group and nothing dangerous. Good experience if you aren't an adrenaline junkie

Leadville, 30m away is a cool town as well. Turquoise Lake is out there and will have bigger fish, but much more fishing priessure

Arkansas River (running along hwy between Buena Vista and Leadville) is decent fishing. Never caught anything big there, but good scenery

Was there 7 years ago with my youngest son for whitewater rafting. There was a fishing guide shop on the main drag in town. Hired a guide name "Wolfman" and he did a great job putting us on fish.

Despite what locals may say, cottonwood creek as you work your way up over the pass is full of nice brookies. The road is paved with frequent pull outs. Then find random trails to follow along the creek. In June it will be flowing heavy but worth a try.

Bishop's Castle near Rye is an interesting stop. A real castle hand built by one crazy dude. You can explore all through it.
