Coon hunters on my property

So my uncle just pulled a chip out of one of our game cams and we saw plot hounds running around under our feeder on the edge our property outside of Nixon. Our eastern border is lined by a good creek that is full of big trees with lots of coons. I'm in vet school and have some coon hound friends that do this as a hobby so I know that's what was going on. These people show plot hounds and identified them for me in the video. This part of the creek is at a bend so our side is about twelve ft higher than the other side. We didn't get any people on the cams, just dogs. The cam that took the video is at the corner of our property so I have to keep an open mind thinking that the dogs out ran the owners but at the same time it's not uncommon to have people run the creeks. I'm just pissed that they are on my land. I feel like they had to come from the northern fence line but those folks are older and just run cattle. Our eastern neighbors have dogs but I've never seen them (I just hear them a lot, no idea what breed). It would be a feat for those dogs to climb that twelve foot drop unless they crossed onto my northern neighbors land and worked their way down. Anyways, sorry for venting. I was just wondering how y'all would approach this. I don't want to put up blatant signs to my northern neighbor and piss him off thinking I was accusing him of something. And like I said it could have been an accident of someones dogs getting out ahead of them. They didn't hurt anything I just don't want them making a habit of running my land. I appreciate yall's input.

Probably loose dogs. I wouldn't worry anymore about it. I have had a bunch of hog dogs and con dogs run across my place. They are not accompanied by their owners. Never considered it a problem. I don't live in the city or consider it something worth throwing a fit over unless they harm something. It's dogs, man.

So the OB can't even decide if the animal on a game cam pic is an auodad or a lion, but your friends can identify specific dogs on one?

Color me impressed.

What are the laws in TX regarding game dogs?

In WV, as long as your dogs start on permissible land they can go pretty much wherever and you can legally enter to retrieve them. Can't shoot on not permissible land, but a lot of dog guys abuse that loophole for "training" and let 'em go wherever.

"Plot" hounds?????? Obviously not a Panhandle term. I get coon hounds, my granddad used to have them in the Permian basin, but what does plot mean in this context?

Every time Ive been coon hunting the dogs have been well out front until they treed. Often times out of hearing distance. Some of them coon hunters have amazing woods skills. They are dam good about knowing where the dogs are based on the lay of the land and eventually catching back up.

most folks in TX won't even consider crossing a fence because of the protection laws - maybe if it is big time game and they really think nobody is around - I have never heard of someone doing it for coons unless an honest mistake

I do know that my dog, when loose, runs all over the place baying up a storm. He is in one place and I start heading over there and then he is about a mile somewhere else in what feels like 60 seconds. It is nearly impossible to keep up with him because he is faster and doesn't dodge tree limbs like the pansy man that I am.

Basically saying that they are probably loose on their own, or once the hunters catch up, they move them back to their own property.

Have a concersation with your neighbors next time you are there. I would ask them if they have seen or heard any dogs on their property & let them know what you found. Not going to offend anyone by being a good neighbor.

To try and answer all the questions in one response: yes we own the land, I guess they could be loose, I had never heard of plot hounds either until about a year ago when I met my Pennsylvania classmates that run plots in competitions/shows and they know their stuff. They are really cool dogs actually. Again I'm thinking it was more of an accident but I'm gonna set up another cam looking at the creek to see what happens. I'll talk to my neighbors on that side next time I'm there.

If it was me I would find out who it was, tell them they should ask permission, and then ask if I could hunt with them.

Are they hunting coons or hogs?

My thoughts as well. Go talk to them or call them just to let them know you'd seen coon hounds running your place and to "warn" them that they might wanna be on the lookout for trespassers running on their property as well. Or you could be more straightforward and ask them if they'd been hunting on your property, and if so to please stop unless they obtain your permission first.

I'll add this as well: It wasn't that long ago that people knew and respected their neighbors better, and it was very common practice to follow coon and fox hounds across fences onto other people's places, and to allow your neighbors to do so.

true but I bet it was talked about before it happened - my neighbors and I cut through each others properties a lot but we have at least said "hey you may see me and the dog cutting through sometime to swim or chase stuff"

We don't have the cover hogs like so we don't see many. We have a million coons and I hunt them all the time. If they are just running the creek bed I don't care. But climbing up on my property without asking isn't okay with me. That's why I brought it up. Thanks for the spelling correction.

I've had several coondogs during my life and while you'd like to keep them from encroaching on anyone else's property that can't always be helped. They are simply following the scent and wherever that takes them. I blame the coons, cats, hogs and other critters for not respecting property rights. As for the dogs and their owners, unless it's a common thing, I'd have a tough time getting too worked up about it. I haven't hunted with dogs in years, but it was always a good practice to let your neighbors know when you are planning to hunt in case the dogs end up crossing a fence or two. Maybe the owners of the dogs can do that too if they have your phone number. Since you have a game cam I'm assuming there is a feeder nearby so eliminating a few coons is probably going to help you out too.

Just curious about the date of the pictures. Deer season and/or fur bearing trapping season ??

I have met or have relatives with every on of these names ( East Texas) except Newgene. I have to think that Newgene is a one of a kind name from Jerry.

I know the not asking permission is not good, but I am with ASA. A few less coons around a deer feeder of mine when it is not hunting season is a good thing.

At Sweetie Pies Steakhouse in Decatur, TX- they run a loop of the more popular Jerry Clower stories inside the restroom. Always good to hear them again.
