So.... what's really going on with gun scrubber.... does wonders with getting stuff off of stuff.... especially guns. But what's it actually doing that makes stuff come off?

I'm asking because I'm planning on taking apart some fishing reels that have plenty of gunk everywhere and that stuff seems to be the best thing for gunk..... why the hell not, right?

OR is it going to corrode/destroy my precious fishing wares?

Any tips on the best way to use gun crubber?

It's about the same stuff as easy off oven cleaner. It is pretty corrosive. I wouldn't want it anywhere near any kind of plastics that could be in your reel, and it might even mar the finish on the metal parts.

There are probably other products and methods you should be considering.

For a fishing reel, I use Simple Green. A degreaser is a lot easier on it, easier on you, and it does a good job. And a toothbrush...

They make REEL SCRUBBER also, but I like to use warm water with Dawn dishing washing detergent and an old toothbrush. It is great on all grease and flume.

No idea on fishing reels, but, on guns...

I just did a side-by-side comparison this week trying to remove fouling on my AAC 51T adapter for my AAC SDC-6 suppressor (tons of build up there)

I used:

Gun Scrubber
Shooters Choice Copper Remover &
Shooters Choice X-tra Clean
Regular Shooters Choice + Kroil
Butch's
Break Free CLP

Break Free CLP was the best

Did you use the breakfre inside the suppressors?

No I just cleaned the adapter on the barrel - it's the tuning fork style, so there's a lot of surface area that gets covered with residue

My habits make me want to hit the suppressor but I withheld that urge

Also shooters choice x-tra clean and their degreaser are not a great combo - leaves a gummy residue that needs a water rinse (they suggest hot water or air under pressure) so I just went back with some bore cleaner to remove that

Be careful with Simple Green. It took some of the blue anodizing off of one of my Avets.

Gun scrubber is an ammonia based cleaner I believe. Most barrel manufactures recommend not leaving ammonia based cleaners inside barrels for more than 10 min because it can cause pitting where it literally eats into the metal. I would hate to think what it would do to small softer metal parts inside a reel.

It's pretty strong for small metal parts and I would certainly not leave it on for very long.

Gun scrubber is overpriced brake cleaner. They both work great for getting that duck season gunk cleaned out. I'd be careful around small plastic parts and delicate finishes. I've seen it eat the camo finish off guns.

It won't melt my synthetic stocks, but it did melt my patio table

I'm a big fan of a blend of ballistol and distilled water.

The water actually works pretty well getting stuff off, and as it emulsifies w the ballistol, it leaves a slight oil film.

It's worked well for me for years on all manner of metal scrubbing.

I tried that and it formed this nasty thick white emulsion

Yup, pretty much what it does - how much water did you use? I usually use 1 part ballistol to three parts distilled water, so it's not very thick, but it is milky.

I learned of it from a CAS shooter who used it to clean up after black powder.

Just don't put it on anything you wouldn't use acetone on. Simple as that.
