How long do you want to ignore this user?
Possums are eating me out of house and home. They must go. The pellet gun I shot it with last night more than 20 times just made it bleed not die. It was gone this morning but saw no buzards.

My .357 would do it but would scare the neighbors and the possum was right up next to the house.

Which .22 pistol should I get for around the house varmint duty and occasional plinking?

Thanks

Why does it need to be a pistol? A 10/22 will kill just about any varmint and at better range than a pistol.

.22 pistol is still gonna be pretty loud.

Suppressed .458 SOCOM should do the trick.

Really impressed with the new S&W Victory... haven't gotten to shoot it yet but it's talking sweetly to me in the store every day.

Single shot 410 is cheap and easy

Subsonic 22s in a manual rifle if concerned w noise

Sounds like step one is is to quit feeding them.

I use subsonic 22s in a T/C Contender single shot. Pistol or carbine, whatever best suits the situation at hand. Not much louder than using an air rifle.

Suppressed PPK in .22 would probably be the coolest way to go about it

I use Aguila SSS Subsonic Sniper .22 LR rounds with 60 grain bullets on armadillos. They are devastating on the dillos, would blow away a possum sure enough.

still a pellet gun, but i can vouch for its power, one pop right behind the ear your opossums wont be taking another step.

Agree with HumbleAg. I use Aguila subsonic .22LR. Neighbors never hear it.

Get a S&W model 63 and use subsonic or colibri ammo.

Heritage revolver from academy with the 22mag cylinder. Then get subsonic 22 for it. You need to get the job done reliably and for not much money. If you have to spend money on it and blow more than 200, you're doing it wrong.

Only problem with the Aguila SSS is that a lot of .22's won't shoot them accurately because of the weight and length of the projectile. Granted, odds of trying to shoot a long way seem pretty slim in this situation though.

Another option is the CCI Quiet .22. Much more power than a CB, but only marginally more noise. I've shot plenty of them out of a bolt action CZ .22 rifle and you hear almost nothing - my Benjamin is markedly louder than these things, but the Quiet .22 have more power and range. Won't quite operate a semi, but work very well in a bolt or even a revolver (though they are loud enough in a revolver).

Get a Ruger MKIII with a threaded barrel (or a Ruger 22/45 if you are on the cheap). Shoot CCI "Quiet" ammo until you get your suppressor. This will still be louder than an airgun, but not terribly noisy.

Keep in mind that sub-sonic .22lr will usually not reliably cycle a semi-auto.

A really cheap and quiet way to go would be to get a Marlin 60 and manually cycle the CCI Quiets. This will make less noise than a handgun.

Do you not own a baseball bat or a golf club? One good whack to the head was all it usually took to dispatch the ones that got in my yard at my last house. They liked to come drink out of the pool and my dog would go freakin nuts for hours.

Opossums are pretty amazing. If I store dog food or cat food in my garage, I can be assured I will start seeing possums in my garage too. They eat anything and must have amazing olfactory senses.

One time one of them "played possum" on my wife. She told me to go move the dead possum out in the yard.... which was not there. I asked her if she shot it. She said no, it was laying there dead. We still laugh about that.

You need a real PCP air rifle with a barrel shroud. Look at the Benjamin Maurader in .25 cal. Shoots a 25-35 grain pellet about 850 fps. subsonic, QUIET, suppressed. rotary mag holds 8 rounds and you can shoot 16 before you need to recharge the air.

Thanks for the replies. I'm a girl and am not going to hit the dang possum with a pickax or a baseball bat, just not gonna happen.

My carry pistol is the .357.

I keep ducks that I have to feed and water to eat the bugs in my garden. I have already read the duck thread. I eat the duck eggs. I don't let them reproduce.

I have a.410 but I wanted a more precise shot since the possum in question was wedged behind the duck house next to the house, thanks to the dog.

I also have a 10/22 but unreliable sights on it since it's old.

I do like the looks of the S&W Victory. Thanks TheEyeGuy.

I will also research the other suggestions. Except for the crossbow.

Yes, it's not a long range round for sure as it will eventually begin to keyhole. But I've seen comments that some folks shot out to 50 yards or more w/o keyholing. My longest shot with the armadillos has been maybe 50-60 feet. You can pretty much walk right up to them most of the time. That 60 grain bullet really packs a wallop.

I will mention that I am shooting these through an old bolt action rifle and I've seen others note that they do not cycle reliably through a semi-auto.

I think the obvious answer is integrally suppressed 22/45
