I have a 10 yr old German Shepard who has arthritis. Is is safe to give him people iuprofen or some other over the counter pain reliver?

If so what dosage?

Ibuprofen is not safe for animals. I don't know of any OTC pain medication that is safe for animals but others here might. You should probably pick up some rimadyl or something similar from your vet.

I'm not a vet, but my dog was given a NSAID for pain relief before his surgery a couple of weeks ago.

I don't know if something like Advil has other things that would be harmful or if the pet versions leave something out.

We use gabapentin(spelling?) and adequin injections. With severe case we had good luck.

Vet recommended them because they are much safer long term for the dog. No liver damage that the other pain meds will ultimately cause.

Buffered aspirin.

You can find aspirin for dogs in pet stores and pet sections in Walmart and the like. It will have the dosage on the label based on the weight of your dog.

We went to our vet and got a script for pain meds and ordered the HUGE bottle from pet meds from his suggestion. My dog is also old so we aren't too worried about long term effects. It was like $1 a pill and made a huge difference
