Amazon generally has good prices on the Pelican 1720. That's the size you'll need for most scoped rifles.

Would this one work?

On sale, single long gun case.

DO NOT use the TSA locks. Put your own lock on there that the luggage handlers wont be able to open.

Won't the case come with built-in lock?

You don't want a built in lock - you want something way more substantial

I used some smaller Master keyed locks that fit my Sako case (basically a Sako-branded Pelican)

And go with a Pelican style and it will last forever

That's a good deal but I'd spring for a double gun case - I've traveled with a back up rifle or a shotgun with mine - and a good place to keep your ammo (not while flying - that's illegal) and cut out some of the foam for binos, sporting scope, cameras, tools/cleaning kit etc

It's not illegal to fly with ammo in the same case as the gun. Some airlines may not allow it, but most do. Many will even allow you to use loaded magazines as storage devices.

Agree with others about getting a double case. More room for accessories or future expansion.

This is the 1720 - http://www.amazon.com/Pelican-1720-Long-Case-Black/dp/B001BTQEZ4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1442461078&sr=8-1&keywords=pelican+1720

I think Cabelas has it for ~$230.

Also, like schmellba said, don't use TSA locks. I think combo locks are best because TSA can't open the case w/o you present, but keyed locks work too. You want something with the shortest shackle possible so the case can't be pried open once locked.

Thought you had to give the combo to TSA?

Haven't traveled with guns in a couple if years

I've been looking for one for my black powder gun. They don't make any long enough.

FAA regulations say only you can have access to the case. Because of that, the TSA can't have the combo. You have to be there to open the case if they want to inspect it. It's not like a key where you could give it to the TSA who could then inspect behind closed doors.

Some of TTAG's articles are bad, but this one is a decent primer on flying with guns:

Does that reg apply to gun cases only? Because TSA sure as **** ripped the locks off my hard golf case after United said to lock it.
Unfortunately, it does. Stick a flare gun in your golf case and you're good to go

I also put zip ties through the lock holes on my cases so I know if someone has tried to open them. Never had an issue with TSA.

Thanks. Was just curious. I knew it was TSA because they left a note in the golf case which was wrapped in duct tape to keep it shut after they tore the locks off. It cost United $250.
How'd you swing that one bigshot? Figured they'd have told you to f*** off if they weren't the one that opened it. They sure as heck don't care when they smash a bag.

Looks like the specs on my Tikka T3 Lite Stainless = 42.5" length. Pelican 1720 has an interior length of 42", so I'm looking at the Pelican 1750.

I got a good deal on the Bone Collector version of this Plano case. I've used it on several occasions roundtrip from Ohio to Texas. It has a screw with o-ring seal so you can close to keep moisture out, or open to breath for storage. Not as expensive as the Pelican, but definitely robust and durable.

Plano Double Scoped Rifle Case

Edit: Also, the locks on the case work for TSA. You can also add your own locks. I've done both depending on the gun I'm carrying.

The 1750 is large. You'll get hit with oversize baggage charges on most airlines.

I'm not sure if Pelican has a case in between the 1720 and 1750, but it would be worth looking to avoid those extra charges.

The Plano one may be a good compromise. Have you had to pay oversize baggage charges ?

Turn the gun a little. You should easily by able to angle the gun enough to clear that extra .5"

Even with a limbsaver pad on there? I could admittedly take that off for travel, but that's annoying.

I fly Southwest, and they don't charge me oversize bag charges. It's usually one of my two free checked bags.

American has charged me $160 round trip with the 1750. Usually in my case it's a weight and dimension issue. I stuff as many guns, ammo, and accessories as possible in that sucker. It has multiple layers of foam so you can get a lot in it.

Some agents don't care about weight and let you slide through. It's really a crapshoot. I usually fly United since I have status, and they don't charge extra. I've had good luck with Southwest and Jet Blue not caring about weight or dimensions.

I went with the mid sized pelican case, the storm. It's lighter and skinnier than the 1750, but really only good for one scoped long gun. I valued the less weight and waterproof features over the need for a larger case. Cabelas has it on sale and I had an extra $20 off coupon. Pleased with the purchase. Will pick up at store next week.

Used a standard plano case from the cademy (~$20) + three padlocks on several occasions in the last few years. Trickiest part was finding the oversize luggage collection desk really late one night when the baggage claim offices were damn near empty.

This website has a nifty design your foam feature so you can virtually lay out your stuff before you buy a case. Mycasebuilder
