My 2yo son got a piece of a green outer pecan hull inside his shoe the other day. He now has what I just thought was a stain on his foot, well it's not. I scrubbed it and ended up peeling a big chunk of that "stained" skin off. Turns out it's more like a chemical burn! Anyone heard of something like this?

LOTS of tannins in those hills. But don't remember the chemical nature of them.

Lots of animals can't eat them though.

Tannins acidic enough to cause this I guess?

Don't remember if tannins are an acid or base, but they are nasty chemicals.

AC?

Seems more likely that the callous that came off was just luck or a blister. Not caused from the staining. The staining is def from the hills/shucks.

I think you're right, seems like tannins have some healing qualities, not the opposite

The hull could of rubbed a blister and you rubbed the blister off

The tannins in the juice can cause very large bubble blisters on skin that isn't calloused up. It wasn't the rubbing against the hull that caused the blister, it was the liquid. Bet his foot was dark brown before the blister popped.

Yes exactly. Started off very brown, then the outer layer of skin began to peel off leaving an exposed lower layer of skin

That looks nasty on the baby skin.

This story reminds me of when I started school as a six year old. Our family picked pecans this time of year and would go to school with black stained hands caused by touching the green hulls.

That would freak out some teachers, but they got educated pretty fast! There were quite a few kids at school with the same black stained hands because a lot of us had pecan trees either in our yard or in the Medina River bottom.

I made the mistake of getting it on my knees once. I figured it didn't hurt my hands, so what the hell if my knees were brown. Yeah, well that Monday at football practice ended up with no skin on my knees, so I learned that lesson the hard way.

Very interested in this...today my 4 month old got a part of a green hull down her outfit in her carseat when we got her out she looked like she had been burned took her to the er which only led them to acusing us of abuse instead of treating her. I cant find much info on it. But found this article.
