Not sure about most here, but I think dove hunting is the best hunting their is.

Nothing like sitting in the great outdoors, pounding beers, shooting the crap with your buddy, and shooting at birds.

Really I don't care if I limit out, or only shoot the gun two or three times. Dove hunting is the best. The actual "hunting" part is more of the cherry on top. I like to go just to sit outside, drink a beer,....... and shoot the gun

As far as shooting birds/flying things go, I'd agree. I've never been pheasant or quail hunting but was comparing dove vs duck hunting with a buddy last night and came to the same conclusion.

During dove season it's warm and not freeze your ass off cold like most duck hunting. You don't have to be quiet and sit still in a blind. The limit is higher so there's more action for you. To me it was a no brainier, but I also enjoy duck hunting and definitely enjoy deer/hog hunting as its nice to sit in a quiet stand and get away from it all for awhile too.

In before the holier-than-thou's crucify you for mentioning drinking beer while there is a loaded gun in the same zip code as you.

That is why I love teal season. It is dove hunting, for a duck.

Bang to buck you simply can't beat dove hunting.

It's cheap.
It requires little to know setup
You shoot a lot.

What's not to like?

Dove hunting is great because it's the first thing you're allowed to hunt after a multi-month hunting hiatus. I love dove hunting. It can be very enjoyable, casual, social... But if you told me I could dove hunt another 50 times or go on 1 more good upland hunt before I die I'd choose the upland hunt every time.

As for the beer, I have no problem with a beer while dove hunting. I do have a bit of a problem with the "nothing like pounding beers" while shooting take. It's all about the details here.

Fortunately, the shooting is usually good enough that we don't have time to "pound the beers". First two days of this season in west Texas were great. So many birds, I was able to use the .410. Beer pounding afterwards was pretty fun too. Old friends, fried doves, and cold beer. God Bless Texas!.

I don't know about y'all, but my dad always preached the dangers of drinking and hunting.

He and a buddy got drunk one night and decided to go shoot some bullfrogs. When they headed out he tied two burlap sacks on his belt, one for empties, one for frogs. They tear the frogs up, finally decide to head back once they're out of beer. They get to the truck and the sack for frogs has one frog in it. Bottom had a hole, every time he threw one in, it knocked the other out. Dad said if he had been sober he would've noticed the bag wasn't getting any heavier.

I love dove hunting. For me, it's a signal of the beginning of my favorite time of year: cooler weather, football, and hunting season.

But as far as hunting goes...its just an appetizer to me.

No problem here drinking a beer or three when dove hunting... been doing it since I was a teen.

But the idea of "pounding" beers doesn't seem too safe to me.

Call me crazy but I love chasing the ducks. The ****ier the weather, the better.

All of the above. Also dove taste a whole lot better than ducks.

Dog picture above...... Dove Hunting is great, but a trained dog elevates the experience so much.
Wish I had one (or time to train one).
Best time of year...today may be THE best feel-good day of the year..... first football game, dove season, deer season coming on.
The only thing negative sometimes is if you raise cattle and are going into the winter without enough hay. Even that is not a problem this year.

In my opinion, people over estimate how much time it takes to train a dog to retrieve. Buy a dog with hunting parents. Teach the dog "Here" and "Sit." Take the dog hunting.

I grew up hunting without dogs. Looking back I can't believe all the time I spent looking for and retrieving birds. Now I'd rather eat a five gallon bucket full of sand than hunt without a dog. Dogs just bring so much energy.

Both of us are old and slow...but still love the hunting!

Opening evening Remi the Lab went to retrieve a downed bird that looked like it just might try and fly a ways...which it did, about 18" off the ground. Second attempt by Remi to knock it down was successful and great to watch, and she came back to much praise from me and other hunters.

The dog to me is what makes the hunt. Upland, waterfowl, or dove makes no difference.

On the beer issue, I don't see how it's possible to get drunk opening weekend up dove season. It's 9,000 degrees, you should be sweating every bit of moisture out of your body and passed out from heat exhaustion before you can actually manage to get drunk.

But seriously, drinking and shotguns are not a good combination.

12 years ago I was back home at a hometown party down an old dead end road. I left as things were winding down. The next morning a few guys went out to clean up and found a kid dead next to a .45.

I haven't mixed alcohol and guns since. I enjoy both but never together.

As far as dove season goes, its nice to get out and have something to hunt but it serves as a warmup for the real fun - pheasant season!

We get way too wound up on semantics sometimes here, mostly because I think there is some type of unwritten competition on this board as to who can prove to be the most "sportsman" out of the bunch.

"Pounding" beers is all relative - for me, that would mean more than maybe 2 beers in an hour. About the only time I actually enjoy a good cold beer (Shiner for me, screw the beer snobs if they don't like it) is when I'm sitting int he back of my truck after a dove hunt and enjoying the moment.
