Does anyone have opinions on shooting .44 Spec/Mag in a lever gun.

Looking at an Interarms Model 65 SRC with 20" barrel. Is $300 about right for used in Good condition?
What do I need to look at in my first possible lever gun?

I do not own a .44 spec or mag handgun yet, but might consider one to pair it up.

I have a Winchester in 44 mag, and love it. Makes a great hog gun!

I have been thinking about getting a deer gun that shoots only short distances..... like they only shoot shotguns with slugs in some places.

Would this .44 magnum have a short trajectory ?

I have been thinking about doing this because every year there is a little more development around my ranch. There are a couple of directions I can not shoot any more. Since I let people shoot does, I always have to school them on where I want them to shoot. (If they stay in the blind everybody is safe, but you never know what a guest might do when they think nobody is watching.)

So I thought if I get a slug shotgun.... problem solved. The nearest house to any of my blinds is about a mile.

I used to have a Rossi 44 Mag with I think a 16" barrel. Real easy to carry. Real fun to shoot. Plenty of thump without too much recoil.

I was a poor college student when I had it and I might have to have another (similar) setup some day.

Hey thanks for that link. That should answer a lot of things for the OP.

Looking at 300 grains instead of 200, the 31.7" drop at 200 yards is intriguing. This almost assures that one could not (should not) use the round for more than about 100 yards. Again, you never know what people will do, and you could still hit somebody a mile away if you launched it 45 degrees above the horizon.

Texags is bad for me. This makes me want to go shopping for a lever action with an octagon barrel in .44 magnum.... just for short range shots at deer or hogs.

I guess this is the modern version of what I am looking at.

website... not websight.

So I am looking at the .44 on the Henry website and my wife walks by and asks what I am doing. I said I sorta like this gun. And she says something like "Well buy it then. We don't live long enough to go without nice things." ...... paraphrased of course, but I wonder what got into her?

I bought my son a Henry Golden Boy .22 last year for his 21st birthday. He loves it. He doesn't get to shoot it much but I can tell he thought it was a really cool gift. That is the only Henry we have in the family at the moment.

I am thinking a lever action deer rifle, with just open sights, would ride just fine on the back seat of the truck.

I like to keep a Henry paired with same caliber revolver. Just the cowboy in me.

Wife sounds like a keeper! Enjoy the Henry

I have a Henry Big Boy in .357. Brass receiver, 16in octagon barrel big loop lever. The damn thing is so fun to shoot I have to be careful because the barrel will get hotter than hades. Henry now makes their Big Boys in steel receivers if you want that instead of brass.

Edit for EyeGuy's post above....That is a good price he is quoting.

.45-70 for $450. Maybe has 80 rounds down the tube, not quite sure its even that much. Will include leather sling and whatever ammo I have on hand- maybe 20-30 rounds.

I have a Rossi 92 24" octogonal barrel in .44mag, I run the 225gr Barnes vortex out of it. I have not had any problem putting deer or hogs down with it, they are normally DRT.

I have the Marlin 1895 Cowboy (octagonal barrel) in .45-70. I've sent 8 rounds down the tube total. It has a mold to fit limbsaver on it (installed by a gunsmith in Bakersfield, CA) and XS ghost ring rear and front site. I'll let it go for $1100 plus about 200-300 rounds of 325 grain Hornady LEVERevolution ammo.

I want to keep this thing, but I don't really have a whole lot of use for it and in 7 years have only taken it out once.

EyeGuy, if I can move my Marlin 1895 Cowboy, I may hit you up for the 44 mag Henry.

You will love the 45-70. It has become one of my favorite rounds to shoot, especially for hogs.
