Any reciprocity with Texas CHL? And carrying in the vehicle while travelling?

Www.handgunlaw.us is a great resource for traveling anywhere with a pistol.

Yes they have reciprocity with Texas. Only weird thing I remembr is you can only conceal one gun, so no New York reloads.

New York Reloads? Two guns instead of one because of mag capacity?

Yep...can only carry one...open carry is legal...and no problem carrying in vehicle

Term supposedly originated with NYPD. Instead of a revolver and a speed loader, some cops would just carry two revolvers.

ETA: Though I suppose with their recent stupid law changes, it might apply to the regular folks carrying now too.

I always carry when I go to New Mexico. if you've got just one gun on you, it's the same as here. No worries.

Where in NM? I travel there extensively, might have some suggestions.

As said above, it is your responsibility to check and be legal. But I will give you my experiences and my interpretation of their laws, take it for what you will.....I am not a lawyer and don't know what I'm talking about.

New Mexico is open carry, but you won't see anyone doing so, at least in the metros. You can carry concealed with a Texas CHL. As said above, you can only carry one concealed. But you can carry one concealed plus one open. And if you got your CHL from NM, you could carry concealed no larger a caliber than what you qualified with.

There are no standardized signs like a Texas 30.06. So you have to be careful to look for them. As far as I can tell "gun busters" signs and the like are lawful "do not carry" signs.

My reading is that you can carry in a restaurant that sells beer, but not one that sells liquor. Since most places sell margaritas, you're hosed. Unless you just ignore it, as many have been known to do. Maybe someone has a better slant on this. It's a weird law, and my reading could be way off.

Newer Mexico is peppered with government facilities, labs, bases, missile ranges, etc. etc. etc. Also with Indian Reservations. Most of those are off limits to carry. But almost all have public highways running through them. It's a very confusing thing, and I'd just be careful and not step out of the car while carrying. In your car on the highway, you're fine, even if stopped by Tribal Police, for instance.

Speaking of Indians, casinos are off limits to carry. I've seen signs posted in casino hotels claiming you can't carry there. Bullcrap, in my opinion. The one I have in mind was in a separate hotel building, 500 yards from the casino.

Santa Fe is old hippy paradise.

Albuquerque is crazy. I've been there 15 days in the past 2 months and seen four SWAT team standoffs with choppers circling.

Newer Mexico...it's like a whole other country.

Whiterock. Will be in Los Alamos for a bit, but that's a no go on pew pews.

Los Alamos is one of the weird places. You go through a security gate on a public highway (501) to get into the lab area, but they don't have any signs about guns. You could probably walk right up to the buildings while carrying, they don't have security checks until you actually enter the building. Not that I'd try that.

If you want to go to Jemez Springs on 501, you can either take highway 4 from White Rock and totally skip LANL, or take "W Road" also marked as West Road, off of 501 and rejoin 501 past the security gates. Takes you by the skating rink and the road to Parajito Ski Area.

A couple of the must-sees I'd recommend in the area, basically in order:

Eat at Gabriels off of 285 at Pojoquque. Have them make guacamole at your table.
Drive to Valles Caldera. DO THIS.
If you're there on Thursday, go to the farmer's market in Los Alamos that morning, next to the library
Los Alamos History Museum
Walking tour of Bathtub Row
Bradbury Museum
Bandelier
Have morning coffee in the Starbucks at the Los Alamos Smiths grocery. Amazing view.
The Black Hole, if it's open. I'm afraid it's closed now.
Walk any of the trails along the canyons in Los Alamos.
Jemez Springs
Gilman Tunnels
Soda Dam

And don't knoww if you're driving or flying, but here's an old thread about driving that direction. Some photos and links. Scroll down, the thread is originally about Amarillo to COS, but it extends to Santa Fe later.

Heading to New Mexico tomorrow to drop the kids off at their grandparents. Heading back to College Station on Sunday. Shouldn't be there long enough to get into a gun fight so i think I'm just leaving the 1911 in the nightstand.

I read about some town in New Mexico where a utility company has a company policy that their employees must not be in that town after dark because of the likelihood of people stealing all they could carry off of the utility truck. Even if they just need a half hour to finish fixing something, they pack up and leave and then come back and finish it the next day.

I figured the story was overblown, but at a cookout a few weeks later, I mentioned it to someone who lives in New Mexico expecting to hear denials that it couldn't be true but instead he named the same town as the one I had read about.

I know when I was growing up there in the 80's there were certain areas around Mora and Pecos where game wardens were required to travel in pairs and I believe were issued m-16's. There are some pretty rough towns around the state.

The only two places I've been to lately where I really felt the need to carry were Albuquerque and Washington DC. ABQ is the only one where I could.

My 357 mag was stolen out of my truck in New Mexico last weekend. Along with all my backpacking gear...

I saw a police standoff with a druggie while driving through Clovis one time.

We didn't stick around to see how it turned out.

Surprised about Mora. Though I shouldn't be, seems like that was the area where a Texas filibustering expedition got their tails kicked. (Warfield expedition 1843)

Since we're talking about the Los Alamos area, we've been told that Espanola is a bad place to go, with rampant gang violence.

Mora is known far and wide as one of the worst areas in NM for crime. POS area that had the most Obama signs I saw across the country during the 2008 elections. No surprise.

We might be going through Espanola on the way to Chimayo.

Google Maps is your friend.

But basically NNW of Las Vegas (NM) It's an interesting area, If you're there, visit the Salman Rasberry Ranch at La Cueva, or the roler mill at Cleveland. Sipapu is an interesting little area. If you want to fish for rainbow trout without getting a NM license, go to the Picarus Pueblo and fish their pond for a fee.

And I've driven through Espanola several times. It's safe enough. Just avoid bad areas and night, be alert.

I've been through lots of bad areas in NM, interacted with lots of the folks that one should be careful of. Nine hundred and ninety nine times out of a thousand, mutual respect and courtesy go a long way. Most normal people are not going to interact with the bad people in bad locations at bad times.

I got temporarily turned around near the airport, and they had some really crappy areas right there outside the airport. And I'm used to, and not bothered by the Oakcliff and Pleasant Grove (used to live there) areas of Dallas.

Halfway done with my one day turnaround. Clovis is still trashy as ever, but I did get to eat at my favorite Mexican food restaurant. What I wouldn't give to have Leal's open a location in College Station. I love this state, but somebody would have to pay me a hell of a lot of money to live here again.

Just keep going till you hit Ruidoso or Las Cruces. In all honesty I don't know about Roswell anymore. I can't recall ever eating at anyplace special there when I was younger. It's been quite a few years since I've spent any time in Roswell.

I do remember going to the alien museum when I was a kid. All it was, was an old store with a bunch of newspaper articles hung on the walls, some tin foil in a glass case and a couple of paper mechet looking fake aliens.

Interesting list I found. I think NM is in the top 20 or so.

Do not try and carry on any reservation! You can drive through just fine but don't stop and open/concealed carry on reservation land.

Ugh. Tacos Garcia and Abuelos in Amarillo blow Leals out of the water. As does El Camino in Tulia, Pepitos in Canyon, and probably dozens more.
