I'm preparing a jeopardy game for some of my subordinates and thought I'd make a home remedy category. Have yall ever urinated on skin after a bull nettle encounter?

Here is the real question: I'm preparing the game for some folks in North Carolina, not Texas, and am wondering if sting nettle up in the Appalachians is similar and if that is a folk remedy for it, and if they'd know that.

I'll hang up and listen. Actually I'll google it, but Texags is usually about as useful.

They are from NC/Appalachia. They probably pee on each other on general principles.

I'll pee on you just for listening to a song by Jennifer Nettles.

Been all over Appalachia and have never seen bull nettle. So would guess my fellow hillbillies have no idea.

I peed on my girlfriend (now the rib) on our first surf fishing trip. She got wrapped up with a jellyfish. I have poured Clorox on my leg when I fell in some bull nettle

Been around NC quite a bit myself. Never saw it.... I have heard the same thing about Jellyfish though, so you could use that.

PeeIng/urine on jellyfish was what we were taught in paramedic school ions ago. However, nowadays it's not a first line treatment.

They also recommended the pee not come from a hydrated person (pH), or us EMS folks.

Incidentally, that does not include the Portuguese Man of War, which is a cnidarian. Don't pee on a Portugese Man o War sting. If it is anything like vinegar, it will make it worse I'd guess.

So, where is the pee supposed to come from?

Cant speak gor thr bull nettle, but have loaded over a half can of Copenhagen in my mouth to hydrate it, and then spread it on my legs for a jellyfish sting. It worked. Knocked the stinginging down by 75%.

Aren't all jellyfish in the Cnidaria family? And all jellyfish sting with little harpoon like cnidocytes? Just some poisons attack differently so they would have and different antidote

A willing bystander or family member. This was back in the late (gasp) 80's.

Boiled down, yes.

The general consensus is that you should rinse the area with just about anything that is not fresh water. Seawater works about as well as urine (minus some temporary relief from the heat). The best rinse being vinegar.

Now to confuse things a bit, there is a difference between American and Australian medical recommendations on Man-O-War treatments. They recommend against vinegar since it may cause the stingers to activate. American--vinegar unless geographical variation suggest a different treatment (tentacle removal followed by massive rinsing with seawater).

We definitely have stinging nettles at high elevation in Appalachia. When I get into them in short pants, I usually try to get out into cold water.

Doesn't the ammonia in the urine help breakdown to stingers

Yes to an extent, depending if the urine is acidic enough. A hydrated or well hydrated persons urine will be much closer to that of water, versus a poorly hydrated persons, pH will be slightly more acidic thus, the nasty smell, and discoloration. However, there are other Metabolic causes.

Vinegar, or a 5% acid rinse, use shaving cream and shave the area.

To the poster that used snuff spit, works due to tbe moderately high acid levels. That's also why snuff works well on wasp stings, but no so well on Bee stings, as bee stings are more acidic so pop will work well.

Aggie chemist could provide more details, but it's all about getting the pH balance more intuned.
