For someone on here who has possibly done the math, what is the cheapest broadleaf herbicide? I have a private applicators license.

My main targets for the broadleaf herbicide are Cocklebur, Marshelder, and Broomweed.

Currently I am using Sendero for Mesquites and Surmount (at 2%) for mixed brush. The Surmount could be used effectively at 1% for broadleaf weeds but not sure it is the cheapest option.

I see 24D Amine online at Keystone Pest Solutions for $26.00 a gallon, plus freight.

I need to find the smartest, tightwad rancher out there who sprays broadleaf weeds, and I will do what he/she does.

I just looked up my cost on Surmount. I am paying $60.95 per gallon.

I have no idea what the correct percentage mix would be for 2,4,D Amine but it sure looks cheap at $26.00 plus freight. Keystones freight is probably $30.00 if I buy just one gallon, but I would lump a purchase with other items to get the freight down.

I am currently spraying for broom weeds with Trooper P+D (generic brand name to Grazon P+D) which is a 2,4,D based chemical. I don't really know a lot about it compared to others. I am sure someone else around here will be able to elaborate more. I am just now getting my mind wrapped around what is best for what since I've gotten my commercial license for work. Up until this year I have worked for a guy that just always told me what to get and how much to apply so I am still learning the specifics of everything.

I've been paying $96 for 2.5 gallon jug and with as late as I am having to spray this year I putting about 1.5-2 pints per acre of chemical. So far it seems I have been getting a pretty good kill on broom weeds and other broad leafs that are mixed in.

I would think any 2,4,D based chemical as long as you followed the label would take care of what you're talking about.

In 2014 our local Co-Op had basic 2-4-D at $43/2.5 gallons. Typical quart per acre application works well for me.

I'm always a fan of using a "synergistic effect" when spraying weeds. In other words, use a combo herbicide. My all time favorite remains "Weedmaster" - a combo of 2,4 -D and Dicamba. If you want a lasting effect, look at Grazon Next. You get what you pay for - never poor boy fences or weed control.

Be careful with 2,4-D and be sure you are not in a restricted county.

P+D can and likely will kill desirable trees with picloram, so know that going forward.

As I work for a distributor, I don't like to put prices out there since they vary so much in different regions. However, I will say $26 + shipping is WAY high compared to our local prices for 2,4D. I would recommend you go in to your local farm chemical dealer (Helena, Wilbur Ellis, Co-op, Sanders, Simplot, etc). I think you would find much better prices and good service at any of these reputable dealers.

Brash (generic weedmaster) is going to be about the cheapest thing to kill young, growing broomweeds. Control will be marginal if they are not growing quickly due to drought or are maturing. P+D or another mixture of picloram (tordon 22k) and 2,4D (what p+d is) would be a more sure thing on the broomweeds. You can even dilute p+d with 2,4D to stretch it out more.

P+D remains active in the soil so clover doesn't like it. Brash does not.

Many counties have restrictions on spraying 2,4-D and dicamba after certain dates without a permit. Also you need to have a pesticide license to purchase and put out large quantities of those herbicides.

FightingFarmer-you work for one of those distributors? If so, what area? I'm a rep for one of the larger chemical companies calling on those distributes in central and north tx

Too bad roundup xtend cotton wasn't already planted across most of the state! Make dicamba damage a thing of the past!

If your broomweed is more than a couple inches tall it may be too late to spray it. You gotta catch it pretty early to have any control (unless there is some awesome new herbicide that I don't know about)

Whoop for that. Something about pink stickers and no dicamba products being labeled for use on XF cotton comes to mind. Just a friendly reminder from your industry rep in case you have forgotten already.

If you put 2+ pints of p+d /acre it will kill larger broom weeds. Label says 3-4pts.

We've had good control in the past using 1.5 pts p+d and 2 pts 2,4D per acre. If you've got a bunch of woody or hard to kill weeds you can add more picloram.

I've been trying to encourage more clover/winter weeds so I've been using weedmaster/brash.

The best weed spray is always a solid turf of grass. Weedmaster/brash knocks it down but doesn't prevent germination.

Dicamba is only regulated in a select few counties, unlike 24d. Dicamba in most cases can still be applied if it is being carried by liquid fertilizer (check local regulation though).

I have a regional support role for one of the distrubutors for the southern half of Texas.

I appreciate the discussion on this. This started out for me when I found a 2.5 gallon jug of Trimec Encore broadleaf herbicide that my dad had left when he died several years ago. I figured the best way to get rid of it was to use it. I could not find a species on the label that I really wanted to kill, so I tried it on Marshelder which takes over the pasture in places. To my surprise this stuff killed Marshelder and seemed to set back cockleburs. I was thinking it might have been sitting in storage too long. Then I made a pass on some broomweed, about 14 inches tall, fresh growth, and it looks like it killed it too. That's when I got the idea that maybe I should try to control the broomweed in a few places and see how it works out. During the drought, the cockleburs barely grew and we don't have many anyway, and the Marshelder stayed in its same area. But now with the rain, everything is sprouting, some of which has been waiting for a few years!

After 3 years of spraying Sendero and Surmount (in June and July) I have mostly reclaimed my fencelines so I can at least check on them and work on them when the Bulls decide to tear them up. What is left is mostly maintenance which doesn't take much time or spray. So now I have this notion to try a little broadleaf control.

You are correct. My point was just for the OP to check county restrictions before making any applications.
