I figured it was safe to assume that awesome bbq trailers are outdoors and you guys would probably have some pretty good input on the subject...

I just landed an awesome shop made smoker trailer for tailgating over the weekend. The pit doesnt have a temperature gauge and I am going to need to put one on there. Any of you guys have an recs for a good one?

Free unlimited brisket during the home game of your choice if you can help me out!

And i know, rule 1, i dont have a picture with me but will post one when i can...

You can get just about any probe gauge to put in the door, smoker stack, etc. - but the temp gauge that you set on your grill grate is better than all of them to determine the actual temp that the meat is at.

Something like this:

Grate Temp Gauge

I have both and have pretty much figured out that there is a 25-50 degree difference between the grate temp and the door temp, depending on the fire. I get that number dialed in so that i can use the gauges in the door/lid of my grill much more accurately.

http://www.amazon.com/bbq-factory-2-pack-CHARCOAL-THERMOMETER/dp/B008RILAWO/ref=pd_bia_nav_t_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=0J4BBMMN3XM0TM3YRE35

My smoker was big so I used two but you can get a single one package as well. Just make sure the probe matches up with the size hole and threads you have and good to go. This one had a slightly bigger dial that's easier to see from far away. Works well

I just bought the Maverick ET-733 dual probe thermometer. I have gone through the instructions and have it all set for some brisket, but have not used it yet. It gets some really good reviews. It has a transmitter and a receiver which should receive from at least 300 feet away. You can use both probes for whatever you want (both in the meat or one just in the pit). You can set an alarm on your receiver if the temp goes higher than the HI that you set, or lower than the LO that you set. It costs $69.99.

I bought it for a Big Green Egg, but have been wondering if I can use it in my big offset. You are not supposed to kink the cables, and not sure if I can close the lid on the offset without smashing a cable.

Lyfe Tyme used to sell their thermometers separate, can't seem to find it on their web page though. You might give them a call. Or you can get a cheapo from academy for around $10. I have the cheapo mounted on my beach pit and it works well enough.

You looking to monitor air or meat temps (or both)?

For air temp, if you have or can make a mounting hole in your lid add a Tel-tru into it.

If not, then some probe-style would be your best bet. Something like the Maverick mentioned. Or if you want to get fancy you could get a controller like a bbqguru and also optionally add a blower to help control heat.

Also think about getting a ThermaPen for spot checking meat temps. Also great for grilling.

As Allen said, get the Maverick. It's a great introductory dual probe thermometer. Never trust the mechanical built in thermometers as they can be over 50 degrees and more off from actual grate temp.

Tel-Tru. Made in America. Take a look at the bimetal gauges if you don't see a barbecue gauge you like. I'm a rep for them, if you see something you like let me know.

I'm interested in the BQ300, 3 inch dial and 4 inch stem, also had a couple questions about it. What's the best way to get ahold of you?
