ok all knowing OB, another lawn problem for ya. So I have this pecan tree in my back yard that hasn't been in the bests condition since moving in. It has been kinda week the first few years but this last fall when it dropped its leaves, on section turned brown but the leaves never fell. Fast forward to spring and the leaves finally fell about the time the rest of the tree started to bud. Now the whole tree is green except for that section, it appears dead. Any ideas or tips for what to do? Arborist? Cut out the dead part and move on? Here is the tree

Yeah, cut it off flush with the ground. Pecans are almost the worst possible yard tree. (Black walnut is officially the worst, Hackberry honorable mention)

Worst yard tree based on what?

Pecans are great trees if kept pruned right. Op you should be able to cut the dead branch off right at the tree and the main tree will be much healthier for it.

Thanks! that is the answer I was hoping for. best case scenario. a hopefully healthy tree and lots of pecan smoking wood. probably more than i can use myself...

Pecan trees generally drop something 11 months of the year -- leaves, deadwood, frass, pecans, pecan husks.

Obviously that one limb is dead. When leaves turn brown and DO NOT FALL OFF, that is a very bad sign.

On the other hand, when leaves turn brown and fall off, it will usually be okay.

House I grew up in, Dad planted a pecan right after he and mom bought the place. When they moved that tree was huge and probably rivaled the output of some of the old native river bottom pecans. Every summer I declared war on the squirrels and on good years we'd easily get 10 gallons of shelled pecans.

We kept it pruned high away from the roof of the house and the garage and still managed to get enough sunlight to the yard that it didn't completely die, though it was a bit thin next to the porch.

Pruning will help. Obviously sufficient rain.

A late freeze can kill all the blossoms and prevent your tree from producing - doesn't mean its dead though.

I know professional orchards use zinc to fertilize their pecan trees, but I don't have a clue on how this is done in practice.

Agree that they're bad yard tree though - catkins are a bi&%^ to deal with. Definitely don't park your truck under them in the spring time!

they are only bad yard trees if you dont like picking up pecans. if you keep the tree pruned properly you wont be having anything ulse dropping aka limbs and stuff. we have 4 pecans in my parents front yard and they look amazing

If that one doesnt work out, I have a million and a half seedlings. You can try again.

Pecan trees aren't terrible. I grew up on a pecan orchard. I would pick up the pecans that fell in our yard and sell them back to the orchard. I made a good amount of money as a kid doing that.

agreed. my first house and now my current house have had pecan trees (current tree his hopefully getting cut down in a few weeks). They're great trees if you like stuff falling every month of the year.

I am not going out on a limb when I assume I know as much about pecans, pruning pecan trees, and taking care of them than anyone on the ob.

They suck balls as yard trees.

SWC has Pecan sap in his veins and he's right. Pecans do suck as yard trees. Some poor bas@#rd I'm Austin got killed by a falling limb a few years ago. My own truck missed being smashed by a 20' long 8" diameter branch by less than 10 feet.

I've always liked having them in the yard.
