So my dad's birthday is coming up and I wanted to get him something along the lines of a vintage picture/map of the well/field he worked his first well. It is in Lea County New Mexico ( I can provide more info if there is someone who can help), was with Amoco. Any ideas on where to look for this?

Can't help ya but awesome gift idea. I used to drive by the first one I ever worked on in jack county every day before I changed jobs.

Good memories.

See if you can get him to tell you a story and get him to mention the lease name/well name if he remembers. That will help you out a bunch.

I've got no clue, sorry.

I might could do something digitally in ArcMap and export it to a .jpeg if I knew general area or even coordinates. You could then take the .jpeg and get it printed. I'm not sure on the oldest imagery I could get though, I'd have to do some research on that. I'll be tied up most of the day tomorrow in meetings but if you don't find a better option shoot me a pm and I'll see what I can do.

This might get you a few ideas. I'm on mobile so I can't look up your area.

Have you checked with the Map & GIS library at A&M?
I think it would be awesome if you could get a satalitte image from about the same time that he was there.
I have some contacts over there, let me send a couple emails out tomorrow morning and I'll check back. What you have should be enough info for now.

Call the Oil Conservation Division for the state, they may have historical maps they can copy....

Is the well still in operation? Lea County is in my back yard.

Don't know what NM's governing body is for O&G, but you could probably pull a plat of the well from their website. I know the TRRC has those available online for most wells in the state.

I know here in Houston they have an old well log and map library for historical files like that. You have to be a paid member to be able to go in and use it, but I don't think it's too much.
Maybe they have something similar in New Mexico

Might check with Brown Book Shop in downtown Houston. They have a lot of O&G stuff.

Oddly enough might check Buckees. The entrance to the bathrooms have a lot of old O&G artwork for sale.

TdoubleH- thanks
Dirty-8-thrity Ag-I just held that back. It is the South Hobbs Unit. I have the API numbers, below (there are 53 wells, 33 still active, he does not remember which one exactly)
Guitarsoup- thanks for responding
Hammerstump- I will PM shortly
mbole11- thanks for the help, I will give it a look
mpezll- I have not looked, thanks for checking your contacts
Matt Schwab- thanks for the idea
GinMan- as previously mentioned, he does not recall which number and there are 53 in the unit/33 still active. Once/if I free up some I
might try to learn the NM regulatory site and see if I can track down
additional info
Van Buren Boy- good one
Cave With A View- I am in the same boat; I know it is a federal thing over there but do not know anything about it. I am just slightly about proficient with the RRC site
tmaggie50- thanks, I will look a little bit later and see
howdydamnit04- thanks for the idea

If this doesn't work out, you might want to look at www.westernhistoryart.com/oilandgas.html

The guys at my office use it to decorate many of their offices.

USGS EarthExplorer has aerial images from 1939-present. If you could give a little more specific location info/timeframe I may be able to find a little more.

call Midland Map Company

http://www.midlandmap.com/

they have all the area covered with current maps - don't know what they have or could reproduce for old maps

I THINK that NM keeps all of those old maps/records in Santa Fe, as opposed to each county keeping them. Not 100% sure on that, going on what other landmen have told me about working out there.
