How long do you want to ignore this user?
A couple of years back someone posted a YouTube link of willies picnic in college station. (1972 from what I recall). It was actually a documentary style concert film thato Id love to see again.

It's since been pulled off YouTube and about every other corner of the Internet and Im having the damndest time finding anything about it. I know it exists because there were scenes from it in the Austin episode of sonic highways.

Does anyone know he name of the show or have any clue where to find it? Hell, I'd even pay for it if that was an option.

Was it the `74 Picnic, where Robert Earl Keen's car was stolen and/or burned up?

Beat me to it.... the 1974 Willie Picnic at Texas World Speedway was legendary and was called "Willies 2nd Annual 4th of July Picnic", meaning the first one was in 1973.

There is a ton of stuff about the 1974 one on google though, so not sure about the OP's question.

I believe you are correct.

A few names surprise me: David Carradine? As in Kung Fu? Doug Kershaw... Didn't think he was that old. Overall an amazing group of artists.... Legends all over the place. Those one day Willie picnics I went to in the 90's were great, but not compared to the 70's ones.

You have to see this if you haven't. It made me realize that I was born in the wrong decade. After seeing this video it became apparent that willies picnic in 1974 could have well been my perfect place in time.

And you may be mislead about who Doug Kershaw is. He was a Cajun/country fiddle player from Louisiana. He was plenty old enough. It's possible you have him confused with Sammy Kershaw.

you are possibly talking about Midnight Special, which was a late night music show back then. Youtube does have a link to the Willie 1974 Picnic filming done by Midnight Special which looks like it was removed or revised into one crummy still shot.

I saw the video you are referring to, but have no idea what year it was. Not much help, but at least you know you aren't crazy.

There was actually a DVD of this in the UK. It looks like it is out of print now.

IMDB Link to Video info

And of course the guy that owns the rights to the TV show did a 9 DVD release of all of the shows and did not include one song from this.

Haysus Christ the artist list is like a Who's Who of progressive country music! What a list of bands! Willie Nelson, Asleep at the Wheel, Kinky Friedman, Waylon Jennings, Michael Murphy, Jerry Jeff Walker, Ray Wylie Hubbard, etc, etc plus folks like Leon Russell? Dang. That would have been freakin awesome!

I love that they had Willie on the brain so much that Willis Alan Ramsey got printed as Willie Alan Ramsey.

He's not listed, but David Allan Coe was there the first day. He was walking through the crowd in the middle of the afternoon with a mask on and a couple big guys that were acting like bodyguards. I didn't know who he was until they introduced him on stage later that afternoon. He wasn't that big of a deal yet. We were thinking, who is this jerk walking around with a mask on acting all tough?

Jimmy Buffett was also a performer, but it was before he was famous. I have a copy of the UK DVD, took awhile to track it down.

I think someone posted this quote the last time this was posted "not a cell phone in that crowd!" that has stuck in my head ever since. Man I sure wish I was alive in that time period!

First one was in some pasture in Dripping Springs. Rumored to have the Hell's Angels as security.
Did not make that one. The next after CS was held in Liberty Hill I believe. It was about the same par as CS. Another billboard of who's who of the day.

I think one of the reasons I loved the original video was because of the crowd shots. Everything about that era was great. The dress, attitudes, beers, music, etc. (It didn't hurt that there were more tit shots than a copy of Playboy.)

I probably should go back and track down the thread because it was absolutely hilarious. People seeing their dads in the crowds, and then I know some unfortunate people probably saw their mothers.......

and, I'm one jealous person Dr. Like I said, probably the perfect place in time for someone like me.....

Tres-its funny you posted asking about this. I remember that thread and watching that video and it was very impactful on me, too- made me really nostalgic, even though it was five years before I was born. I think it made me miss my dad. I don't think he was there, but he was at plenty of similar shows and he got me in to enjoying this kind of music.
