Time to get some new work boots. Mine are two years old and starting to get uncomfortable. Gotta be steel toe, have typically had slip ons in the past but am open to trying a lace pair, I do a lot of walking and am on my feet all day on uneven ground so comfort is a must. Academy is the only thing around I have to buy something. Any recommendations?

Try to find a Redwing store. Even if you have to drive a ways to get to one. Uncomfortable boots suck.

I had one pair of red wings and they chewed my feet to pieces. Absolutely hated them. Might have just been that style though

I second Redwing Shoes. Go with the Pecos.

I always just wore cheap Walmart wolverine boots when working at a recycling plant during the summers.

I heard Danner boots are great

I have had a pair of redwings for 3 or 4 years and they are the most comfortable boots I have ever worn

I like Danner Super Rain Forest Steel Toe boats. They are not cheap but last and comfortable.

Be careful with Danner if you need slip resistant soles. Mine work great on grass, dirt... But I have to be careful on smooth concrete or tile on rainy days.

I have those Danner Super Rain Forest Steel Toe boots and the have Vibram oil & slip resistant soles. They are even Electrical Hazard rated since the electric utility I work for has the steel toe & electric hazard requirement. Never had a issue slipping wearing the Super Rain Forest boots.

Redwings hands down:

For muddy days, my pair has lasted 9 years of TX jobsites:
http://www.redwingshoes.com/red-wing-shoe/4470-red-wing-shoes/4470-red-wing-mens-11-inch-pull-on-boot-brown $225

For dry days:
http://www.redwingshoes.com/red-wing-shoe/926-red-wing-shoes/926-red-wing-mens-6-inch-boot-brown $250

I have spent more than 16-18hrs in either pair at work and haven't had issues.

I think it was the pecos red wings I had before and they just didn't agree with me. I kept thinking I just needed to break them in more. 8 months of constant wear and many many many band aids on my feet later I decided to call it quits and get a different pair. Not against trying them again though. Could have had a bad pair

These boots I have in steel toe.

Yeah, I just meant just make sure you have slip resistant soles... I though they would be standard.

My twisted x steel toe boots have been great. Each pair had lasted 3+ years of daily wear.

Go to Academy and grab everything your size over $120.

I use/love Redwing but have down the Academy grab succesfully a few times.

Another vote for red wing. Mine took awhile to break in, but they are great once they do.

Ariat. I just bought my first pair, and they are awesome, waterproof, and built right. I wore the Redwing lace ups for a long time, but they haven't really tried to make a more modern boot.
Ariat has nailed it for sure.....

After 27 yrs of wearing steel toes, consisting of Redwing, Timberland, Ariat, Brazos, Brahma, and others, the most comfortable one I have worn is the Wolverine 10088.

Go to James Leddy boots in Abilene & have them make you a pair of steel toed boots. They can make either slip ons or lace ups. The initial cost is higher but they will last a LONG time because of the quality of materials they use. Also, there's no break in time on them because they're made to your foot measurements. The first time you put them on they're as comfortable as your favorite old almost wore out boots/shoes & only get better.

My work boots are Leddy's and I wear the heck out of them. They're 4 years old & still on the original sole. They're made out of oil tanned horse hide & that's tough stuff. They're cowboy boots & not steel toe, but I ranch & ride horses as a hobby/weekend job so I don't have a need for steel toes.

If you ever buy a pair of handmade boots you'll never go back to factory made.

Another vote for redwings.

I've got a pair of lace up steel toes that are about 15 years old and extremely comfortable.

Redwings.....twice the proce, half the life. Last pair I had were warrantied twice for soles falling to pieceS. I gave up. They aren't all that comfortable either. Not even in the same game as my ariat work boots. Literally more comfortable than my tennis shoe. Maybe you'll have better luck but it's a hell of a gamble considering the options out there.

As you can see, your feet will tell you which boot to get, not TexaGs.

Dr. Marten's are extremely comfortable, but they do wear out pretty fast. We have a work thing with Redwing where they pay for half of the boots, so that's what I'm wearing now. Still trying to get the broken in, but I like mine so far. I'm required to lace ups.

The service company I worked for during college would give us a $100 reimbursement on a new pair of work boots. Plus, if you told the employees at the Redwing store you worked in the oilfield you got a 15% discount. It made buying the boots very reasonable. If you do decide to get another pair of RW check for a discount.

These aren't the best looking to me, but I tried a pair of these on at the Redwing store a few months ago. They didn't have my size in the boot I wanted and wanted to check the size before I ordered the style I wanted. These things were comfortable as hell, enough that I'm probably going to order a pair to hunt in.

The best pair i have had have been redwings. 9 years old and going strong.

I did decide to try a pair of the Ariat work boots and the heels stretched out 2 weeks after wearing them, had to wear 2 pairs of socks to keep them on. Worst pair of wormwork boots I have had.

You don't break red wing Pecos boots in, they break in your feet. They are good boots after several weeks of hard wear. A tip I got from the rig hands is to fill them with water and let them sit a few hours, then dump them out and wear them soaked until they dry. Tough on your feed, but it breaks in much faster.

I prefer my wolverine lace ups I got from academy. They fit comfortably from the start, and have only gotten better. They don't last as long, but mine have been offshore and in the warehouses many times now aside from personal work, and they have been good for me.

A texags poster i work with had a similar experience. He found out that certain lines of redwings are now made in china and they are utter crap.

The ones I had were well over 200 bucks when I got them. They were USA made lacers. One pair was even paid for in full by my employer. I don't care if a 13 year old chinese kid sews them up or an old pissed off white guy...poor material is poor material. For my feet, they don't want to 'break in' a boot for 4 weeks. I still have my redwings, but they get worn 4 times a year and require a 30 dollar orthotic to fit right. Not a fan of redwings at all. My Ariats are broken in in 3 days and ready to work for 3-5 years of mud and heat. They work for my foot. That's why I mentioned that asking about boots is like asking for the best handgun model...really just depends on the material because over 150 bucks, they are all leather and rubber stuck together with string and glue.

I had the dr. martens suggested above. Lasted me about 3 years. Leather was still good, but soles had worn down quite a bit. At $100 a pair that's not bad.

Every time there is a work boot thread the red wings reviews are so all over the place that I probably won't ever get a pair.

I'm now wearing wolverine buccanneer multishox(bought from academy). They are slip on, but there is a lace up version as well. I've had them for a year and a half of almost everyday wear and have been very happy so far. If you're buying from academy I'd pick out a pair of waterproof wolverine's. They seem to be better made than the cheaper versions and I hate having wet feet.

I always tell people you're going to be wearing these at least 40 hours a week so get something you like and fits well. Not the time to just grab the cheapest pair.

Never had an issue with Red Wings other than price; moved to the Justin Original Work boot, USA-made, and that's all I have purchased for the last 10+ years. Mine are daily wear, hold up well and comfortable. Justin also has a Chi-Com product I have avoided.

I wear a pair redwing 3505 everyday. Took a solid painful month for them to break in (50% office, 50% site). 6 months later and they're the most comfortable boot I own.
