Anyone have any recommendations for a Texas Desert Mule Deer Outfitter? We're willing to pay for a top notch hunt. Thanks in advance.

Randy Shipp

Lives at Lometa but has mule deer country out by Van Horn. Google Shipp Ranch deer hunting for his website.

I've known Randy since I was old enough to know people. They consistently kill BIG Mulies

Call Wildlife Systems 325-655-0877 or check out the website. Talk to the owner/operator Greg Simons. Greg is an Aggie and President of the Texas Wildlife Association. He has some great properties to hunt and his crew is outstanding. Very professional. I know he hunts the Gage Ranch (Marathon) and the Jobe Ranch (Kent) but I'm sure he has others too.

I grew up in Lometa and have also known Randy since I was a kid. He's highly knowledgeable about deer & has been in the business a long time.

I've cowboyed on the Jobe Ranch out north of Kent & it's outstanding mule deer country. The Delaware Mountians are on the south end of the ranch & probably border some of Randy Shipp's country. The trophy room at the ranch headquarters has some impressive mule deer mounts in it. The Jobe also has pronghorn on it (at least it did last time I was there).

Lane & Misty Sumner used to live on the Jobe. Lane was the ranch manager & Misty is a TPWD Wildlife Biologist. They did a lot on that ranch to improve the mule deer hunting like increase and disperse water evenly on the ranch as well as predator control. Lane told me the first year they were there they killed 6 mountain lion in the Delawares & killed at least one a year after that.

The Jobe has some beautiful country out there.

Let's be honest. He has big mule deer because he selectively breeds them. It's not because the Delaware Mountains just have an enormous amount of huge muleys running around. Not trying to stir the pot, but just getting all the information on the table for somebody that is possibly considering a hunt with them.

Is it fenced?

txaggie02, yes he's got penned deer. But, the Delaware Mountains have always had bigger deer in them. The Apaches to some degree, but rarely the Davis Mountains in comparison. Penned deer wouldn't last very long in West Texas, and not because someone shoots them. .

Nope. Not fenced. And If I remember correctly it's something like 25,000+ acres.

This is getting good. And not just because I'm going on this hunt with the OP.

How many 200 B&C and up mule deer are taken in Tx every year? I'm not plugged into the mule deer crowd.

Years ago the answer was none ! I've been somewhat detached the last few years, but very few. Check out TBGA for the last few years.

Whats the best whiskey for your brother in law to bring for you to drink on a hunt such as this? Anyone know?

Skys the limit, don't hold back here. Money is no obstacle.

Well since you will be drinking it no need for a special decanter just go with a bottle of Dalmore 64 Trinitas.
At somewhere just north of $160,000 it should be attainable. There are only 3 available so you better look fast. Its far from the most expensive but should be good for a mule deer hunt.
