Headed to El Salto Mexico at the end of the month with my Dad to chase bass. Trying to decide what type of line to set up my reals with. He's gone braid, but I'm back and forth between the braid (probably 50lb test - 20lb dia equivalent) and a high quality mono (20 or 25lb). Anyone have any experience on el Salto or thoughts, pros and cons for each? Thanks in advance.

For the trip of a lifetime I might rig a reel or two with 20 lb flurocarbon for something between the 2 line types, but I personally like mono better.

A lot would depend on what lures you were using. If it's deep cranks/spinnerbaits I'd lean towards mono all the way. If it's heavy jigs or Carolina rigs, then I'd have a reel rigged with braid. Again, and even though I hate the **** otherwise, I might rig a reel with flurocarbon if I was unsure what was to be fished.

I don't have any experience on El Salto, but I tie a Fluorocarbon Leader on braid up here in NETX, including Lake Fork.
rather be fishing

I switched most of my reels to full fluoro a few years back. I love it. I'm pretty fond on P-Line 20lb. You should still have at least one rod rigged up with braid, though.

All day this.

I only have one freshwater baitcaster left that's strung with braid and it's more out of nostalgia than anything else. Flourocarbon is the way to go.

Ha, I wasn't, but I will now...we're doing 3 days on El Salto and 1 day deep sea out of Mazatlan. I've been like a kid waiting for the end of school for a while now.

My Dad has always been after a "lunker" and after years of failing in the states, he decided he was going south of the border. He took my younger brother last year (caught tons of fish, but was the only boat in the 3 days that didn't make it over 5lb) and will take my older brother next year. So I guess he's the one that should be bragging since he gets to go 3 times.

As far as the line, I've gone back and forth on which to use knowing the potential for quantity and quality of fish. I've really only spent significant time with mono, which is why the dilemma. I'm taking three reels, so based on what y'all are saying, I'll probably rig two up with Fluorocarbon and the third with braid. I'll be heading to the lake to get comfortable with the setups this weekend, so we'll see how it goes.

We're double checking with them, but the original equipment sheet just gave preferred brands and weights.

I'm personally not a fan of fluorocarbon lines. I would go with braid for jigs/worms and mono for everything else. I've tried multiple fluorocarbon lines and do not feel like I catch any more fish than I would with mono. Plus I really don't like the way it handles. Maybe just my 2 cents but I think that fluorocarbon lines biggest winner is the fishing line companies. Charge twice as much and make everyone think it's the bomb.
