What is the general consensus on where Axis can be found free-roaming? We have a property in Edwards county and have taken a couple decent Axis (31" & 33"). We are looking at selling our property and getting something a little bigger/nicer but one of our requirements are Axis must be in the area. Interested in hearing your thoughts. Thanks!

Look in the Rocksprings, Camp Wood, Bracketville type area

That's exactly where we are (between Camp Wood and Rocksprings) but would like to cut our drive time down a little. Once we get to Camp Wood it takes us an additional 50 minutes to get to our property (17 miles on a somewhat rough caliche rd).

You must be hunting near the area where i have been hunting (~10-15 miles south of camp wood then through he boonies for a while)

Where is home base? DFW? Houston? Wacko? If near DFW, there are supposed to be some areas around Hamilton

Yea, pretty close. We are 5 miles north of Camp Wood and then 17 miles off into BFE. It sure is great hunting though. We have started looking at Junction but was not sure if Axis were as abundant that far north (especially north of I-10). Ideally the Comfort/Kerrville area would be nice so the women folk can trek to Fredericksburg or Bandera if they make the trip.

Home base is Houston.

North of 90 and west of 83 is what I have always been told is the heart of free range axis country. So it looks like you are in the right spot already

Vance area? Have a good friend with a couple thousand acres there.

If you are looking to sell you might call Glynn and Western Hill Country Realty. he is a great Broker.

We are loaded up with axis just outside of comfort, north of I-10. Took 2 doe and 1 3x3 this past year.

They are found from Kerrville west and more and more are being seen around Fredricksburg, Comfort, Boerne. as well.

Saw one dead on the side of RR12 north of Dripping Springs a couple weeks ago. Might have gotten out of someone's place though.

My grandfather has some on his place in Stonewall too(all low fence).

Thanks gwellis, will look into it. We are in no rush to sell and will probably end up buying a property before ours ever goes up for sale. Current property is west of 55.

Just what we needed; another encouragement for even more "invaders"!

Seriously, this is my 18th year to live in the Hill Country, and small herds have existed all around, and even in Boerne proper that entire time. They are thriving and exist all along the I-10 corridor well beyond Junction. Just remember they need a good source of food to remain in an area, so any property you consider needs to at least be close to one. Then a feeder can get them on site.

They're pretty far west and north too. Concho, Runnels, Tom Green, Coke Counties all have some populations.

College Station, TX has a nice population of free-range axis, and elk for that matter. Plus at least one chocolate fallow buck that I know of.

Silverhorn is a great yet remote hunting area.

For what it's worth, I did a day hunt 20 minutes north of Boerne a week ago. 20 deer under the feeder and 15 were axis.

You talkin the golf course, Gil?

Yeah, a quick look at the aerial photo reveals a pretty good haven for em below the dam south of the parkway! Who is able to hunt em?

4 years ago I let a couple of young dogs loose to run some energy off, so that they would be a little better able to focus on some training tracks I was going to put them on the next day. About 20 minutes later I hear them out in the pasture bayed solid. I thought they were baying my cows, and took off to go remedy the situation, but when I get there they are baying a wounded axis buck. No idea who shot him, or where, he wasn't very big. This is north of Bryan just a bit. Have seen one other since then.

Silverhorn has been home for 7 years now and it has been a lot of fun. In our first year we saw blackbuck and fallow but have not seen any since. We do have 3-4 Zebra on the property; pretty awesome when one comes around. Only one seems to hangout near our property though and makes an appearance a few times a month.

Pretty cool place. As an aside, did you guys buy into the care flight program? You can by an annual membership that covers your flight if need be. Very inexpensive for a great piece of mind. We did and thankfully have not had to use it.

Anyone out in the boonies needs to look into this. Not meant to hijack your thread.

BoerneGator,
Seems like I see a new one dead in the median, shoulder or turned into road pizza each time I drive through Boerne on 10 near the ball fields on the north side of town.

Huge herd running around my house about 3 miles east of Bandera. All over this area.

Not to hijack the thread (sorry) but I am looking for an opening for my bro and I on a place around camp wood/rock springs. Thanks in advance

That's because there are multiple small herds around town that take shelter during the day in various enclaves of cedar thickets and they come out at night to graze along the interstate. Far as I know, it's the only form of regular attrition they face.

I live on the river between kendalia and Sisterdale north of Boerne about 7 miles. There are tons of Axis out here. Tons!

South Hays County has been thick with them for years. We've seen them regularly at my parent's place since about 2002-2003.
