I am looking for a Duck club in North Houston area for the 2015-2016 season. I currently am part of a club that has properties in Katy, Eagle Lake, and Victoria areas, but it is too far of a drive excluding the Katy properties. Looking for one in Conroe, Huntsville, Dayton, or Livingston areas. Would also be willing to lease private land for the year.

Interested as well. I am in the Humble area and keeping my eyes peeled in the Anahuac area as well.

Anybody have any experience with these guys: http://www.castnblasthunting.com/???

I understand they have places both west and east/NE of Houston so I'm going to meet with the owner and tour their spots after the season is over.

Be very wary of any "club memberships" offered through a guide service.

Second this statement. Made that mistake a few years ago and got screwed. Also-- insist you talk to members and not just the owners/managers. They may still pad their story with members, but I found it easier to smell the BS when I talk to members.

Why is that?

The Catfish, are you getting back on the same club next year?

Yes, I will most likely return unless something happens between now and then.. Been a good year.

I have found if you can get a few members on the phone you can really figure out how well the club is ran. Its the managers/owners job to sell you on the club and highlight all the positives, but if these things aren't run well they are a complete cluster. Members will often give you the real insight on: availability of hunting locations, how well run the the place is (issue resolution, ect.), and any 'unwritten rules' you need to be aware of.

Not all clubs have the negatives, you just have to do your diligence.

Finn-

Also clubs that are run by guides can sometimes mean you have a group of hunters with a guide 200yds from your blind every time you go out to hunt. Also the spots holding birds are priority spots for the guide service of the business. More focus on guiding, less on the season shooters. They are looking to get $200/day from people all season long while your check was cashed at the beginning of the season.

Dedicated hunting clubs without guides serve the season shooter much better without the guide service pressure.

Will second DUMan's advice to stay away from Cast N Blast. Had a bad experience with them and will not get on a lease with them in the future.

Edit- To the OP, there are some leases out near China- between Liberty and Beaumont. Flooded rice and crawfish farms. Broussard's is the name of one guy that runs them. Can't remember the other. Very little public info about duck leases in that area though. Winnie area might have more and might try calling some guides in the area to get a better list/contacts to reach out to.

"Club members" are used to secure the outfitter's land. That is how he pays for it. He makes his money on guided hunts. The guided groups will always get first crack at the properties that are actually holding birds.

You will be stuck hunting the scrub properties with a bunch of other guys, their won't be enough water, etc.

I'm sure there are a few exceptions (I have heard Third Coast is run differently). Just do your homework and beware.

Thanks.

In that case, any recs for a dedicated hunting club? Preferably one on the east side of Houston. Maybe with some flooded timber/bottom land spots?

Lots of good info in this thread about duck clubs.

I have been on a really bad one and am now on a pretty damn good one. The guide issue is huge and should be a showstopper for anyone looking at hunting clubs.

I don't know of many clubs on the East/NE side of town. I grew up in Sour Lake and hunted all around there, Nome, China, ect.. and I actually know the Broussards that own the crawfish farms. I didn't realize they were leasing that stuff out now, but that's some pretty good hunting ground if you can get in on it.

I have heard good things about the Blessing Hunting Club. They have land east and west of town, not sure about north though. They also have property in OK and AR. May be worth a look.

I thought I had read where they had also acquired some leases east of town, but that must have been for something/somebody else. I've thought about joining them, and may still yet in the next few years. A buddy of mine was a member for a while and said it was pretty solid.

Nope, no current properties east of town. Might have been that way a couple of years ago before I joined, but everything is southwest of town (due south of El Campo).

Feel free to give me a shout if you have questions. I am a current member and will likely join again for next season.

No problem, I probably had it mixed up with another club or something in my small mind.

I appreciate the offer to give you a shout. If you need a tag along on a hunt, just let me know too (hint, hint, wink, wink).
