Planning on taking the wifey backpacking this spring break, probably a 3 day, 2 night trip. Nothing too intense since this would be her first time. Ideally, I'd take her to Lost Maples in the Hill Country, but I don't want to make the drive.

Any suggestions for good backpacking within a 2-3 hour radius of College Station? Any places comparable to Lost Maples would be great.

Thanks.

Campus?

On a serious note. Just go to Austin. Its 2 hours away and there are great places up there.

San Antonio is another city within reach and have a number of hiking areas.

The Goodwater trail around lake georgetown is where you want to be. It's about 26 miles around the lake and the trail is rugged and perfect for backpacking. It won't be crowded even for spring break.

Person I talked to from TAMU Outdoors said that they hike the Georgetown trail as well. For myself (haven't backpacked since high school) and my wife (never backpacked), do you think we can cover that entire trail in 3 days, 2 nights?

honestly, I think its a stretch. Assuming you are in decent shape, it won't be too terrible physically. What you will struggle with is the fact that you don't have a routine setting up/taking down camp and no one to really show you how to be efficient there. 8+ miles/day means you will be tired when you get into camp, you'll take forever to break camp in the morning, get hiking late, etc. This assumes you don't remember much from your highschool days and will have to re-learn as you go. If that is incorrect then never mind.

I'd check out pedernales falls state park west of Austin. Maybe consider a base camp style for her first trip. Hike in and stay 2 nights in the same place, taking a day hike on the second day.

There's 150 miles of trails in the Sam Houston nf on the Lone Star Hiking trail there's also a great trail around lake Somerville between Nails and Birch Creek parks. And three hours will get you to some parks in the hill country like Perdenales and Enchanted Rock.

Growing up in Georgetown and hiking/backpacking all over the continent, it cracks me up to think of backpacking around Lake Georgetown. I am sure it is "pretty" in its own way, but I definitely think I would drive a couple extra hours.
