I need a little help from the experts on the OB. I'm sure it's been cused and discussed a thousand times but can you guys give me ammo advice for .223/5.56? Specifically for hunting whitetails from say 150 and in no more than 200.

Their are a couple of Federal rounds that I like but are kind of hard to find. Also, I'm in Houston and could use a good, reliable spot to grab them.

Thanks for the advice.

Last year I found 2 boxes of 75gr hollow points at Academy, but I can't remember the manufacturer. Might have been Federal. I dropped 4 doe in their tracks with one shot each. Two were neck shots and the other two were high shoulder shots. And I absolutely demolished a family of hogs with 10-12 rounds. All the shots were 125-ish. I gave the 2nd box to my nephew who hunts with his AR a lot.

I shoot 62 grain Federal Fusion ammo. I can find it anywhere. In fact Midway USA had them on sale plus a Federal Rebate for about $17/box.

The best advice I would say it to buy a couple of boxes of each and see what your gun shoots best. Definitely would suggest a higher grain bullet such as 60 and above.

I personally use Hornady match or PMC precision for hunting (hogs, I don't use it for deer). 75gn boat-tail hollow points are what I like. They group really well out of my 24 inch barrel with a 1/8 twist.

ammo

I bought 4 boxes of this last night when it was $13 each.

What twist is your barrel?

1/9 twist.. it's a Windham with a 16" barrel

Hmmmm, since you have a 1/9 I'd probably stay away from the really heavy stuff. You'd probably want something less than 70 grains for optimal accuracy and performance. But that's just a rule of thumb, you could take some 80 grain tracers or something and find that your gun shoots them very well, every gun is unique. Again, I'd buy a couple of boxes of two or three different rounds from 60 to 70 grains and see what you shot the best: hornady, federal, etc.

That 62 grain trophy bonded Federal is good stuff.
