How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'm looking for ideas on a low, variable-power scope (with illuminated reticle and BDC if available) for a 5.56 AR. Something on the order of 1-4 or 5ish. Ideally I would want one of the Leupold Mark 4 models, but those get pretty pricey.

I noticed offerings from Burris that are less expensive, but does anyone have any other recommendations? Basically, I know about the Leupold and Burris scopes, but searching for other manufacturers is a little daunting, and I was hoping someone had ideas to share. I'd prefer to stay in the $500-800 range, rather than $1000+.

Thanks!

Here was a nice mark 4 on here the other day - I think it was Leo fire dot reticle but a good one nonetheless

Leupold VX-R fits your budget and needs nicely.

You might want to check out the Vortex Viper PST 1-4x24, I've been happy with mine.

Although I am considering selling it to change up my setup, I have the SWFA 1-4 and its a damn good scope, especially for the money. They came out with a 1-6 after I had bought mine, same setup just more magnification. I would highly recommend looking at it as well as the Vortex.

They have a demo of the 1-6 for 899.99 instead of 999.99

Nice, that's a good deal right there.

Thanks guys.

In addition to the Leupold, I have added the Burris XTR II, Vortex Viper PST, and SWFA SS HD to my research list.

Thanks for the used offers, but for now this is going on my Christmas list so I'd prefer a new model. Now, if I don't end up with one at Christmas, I might be hitting you guys back up since I'll have to pay for it myself...

SWFA will most likely put those on sale for Black Friday... if you're patient.

I love it

Not saying the scope is the one for this thread due to your price range, but dammit, if the PA 1-6 ACSS is not on of the best values out.

The ACSS reticle alone is worth for $250

Read the Burris warranty before considering any other makee.

Opinions on the Zeissconquest?

Looking at a 3-9x40.

Conquest is good but discontinued. The Terra line isn't as good. Leupold or vortex are better values.

If it's the old 3x9 Conquest, it's fantastic. If it's the new Terra line, run, they are horrible.

Interesting to hear about Zeiss.

I imagine the resale market on scopes is pretty broad so it shouldn't be hard to get one, should it?

There are a few out there, I believe Eurooptic has the last of them that I could find, but I think they are demo's. I know I just went through this helping my brother set up his first deer rifle (which the ****er goes out and shoots a 172 as his first deer kill ever. Thanks Obama). I have the old Conquest on my rifle and he really liked it, as do I, but didn't want to buy a used scope.

We looked at a lot of scopes and ended up on the Vortex Viper HS 2.5-10. They were on sale at Cabelas for $309, which is about $100 off everywhere else. I ended up buying one too because I liked it so much to use on my AR. We looked pretty hard at the New Ziess Conquest HD and the Terra lines. They just don't match up with how the old Conquest is. So if you can find a new one of the old version, jump on it. If not, I'd look at another brand. They really screwed that new line of scopes up IMO.

I will tell you that he originally bought the new Swavorski 2-10x36 and ended up taking it back. It actually sucked compared to the Vortex. And I mean sucked, the eye relief was terrible for he and I. But one thing to remember is everyone sees differently, so how one person looks through a lens with a particular coating on it may not be the same for the other.

Im thinking about that new 1-4 at swfa or that Leupold package above. I like the 30mm and illuminated reticle on the swfa though. Throw in the ssalt mount and it is about 330 plus tax and shipping.

+ whatever on the Vortex. Best scope for the money hands down. And the warranty is outstanding. I no longer worry about my glass. I own 4 of their scopes. I have the PST 1-4 on my bolt action 300 Blackout. It is a GREAT scope.

Anyone have any comments on what would be better, that Leupold package or the 1-4 swfa scope in the black Friday ad?
TheEyeGuy

I'd be looking at the swfa. The mark ar is a good scope but not a huge difference in quality there and the iluuminated reticle is nice.

What is the purpose of having such a thick 3/4 circle on the PSA reticle? I've never used one but it looks like it would block out a good chunk of your field of view

I'm not that well versed in tactical / varmint reticles so school me if you can....

Also, Anyone else having a hard time reading that Black Friday ad? I see prices but no description on lower magnification scopes

And I googled to find out how to get on their mailing list but their mobile site doesn't show it anywhere - hazards of surfing with a mobile I guess

I don't think the BF ad is completed yet. I read it was 'leaked' by an ar15.com member that found it. So they made it public but unfinished. Or something like that.

It is more of a tactical function - the pst 1-4x has something similar.
On my PST, when it is set at 1x, it is essentially a red dot sight, but when illuminated, the cross hairs would not be as easy to see in a stressful situation as the larger semi circle.
atmhockey
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Exactly. At 1x you barely can see the BDC markings and the horseshoe works as a both eyes open red dot. At 6x the BBC works awesome. I have rang 12" steel at 400 easily with it. Could most likely go further but that was all we had distance wise.

Just bought their new FFP 4-14 ACSS scope.

I actually went cheap and got the redfield battlezone for $199 at academy.

Liked the mil dot reticle, and figured going cheap would be fine for just punching paper.

After some shooting, i was incredibly impressed with it. After doing some research, i discovered why i got a good bang for my buck...redfield is made by leupold.
