Buy a field dressing kit from Academy. They are cheap. Knives are sharp.

I like a fixed blade drop point for caping out deer.

I gut a lot of deer because we kill so many. I use a Cutco serrated. Makes quick work. Have one of those kitchen electric sharpeners to sharpen it up.

Then deer is hung in the cooler. For caping I use a Gerber.

Any sharp knife that will hold an edge. Don't overthink it for basic field dressing, caping, quartering and deboning. I don't care for serrated or gut hooks or the myriad of other novel ideas.

With that said one good piece of gear (that appears like it falls in the novel ideas class) is a havalon knife. If you need precise cuts, especially around the skull, antlers, etc and are sending it to the taxi then it makes that job much easier. Much more precise cuts are possible than an average knife since it is bascially a scapel, especially with the size of the blade. Now most Texas folks can just drive the four wheeler up and saw off the whole head and don't have to worry about caping the skill, but its priceless in the backcountry for big game.

I have several knives in my bag, I have a small anza for caping and a custom made skinner that was given to me by my grandfather " was made by some HFD guy". Those are my trusted go to knives but I also have a case skinner and a gerber with serration " used on hogs". I would highly recommend a Wyoming saw they are awesome and compact.

Concur with the wyoming saw if you need to go through bone or to remove antlers. Great backcountry tool.

I like the Havalon.

Wyoming saw is also a great tool.

I've got an Anza that has yet to be sharpened after cleaning quite a bit of deer. It's been the best knife I've bought.

Outdoor Edge Flip n Zip. The gut hook blade is a fantastic design, great for skinning deer. And get the blaze orange version - you won't lose it cleaning a deer after dark.

Havalon and portable Sawzall or big limb loppers.

No seriously, I think Anza is a great buy. Affordable and extremely high quality knives. Take a look at Anza.

I have yet to find anything better than a SwingBlade. 2 blades, one for skinning and the other for cutting. They hold an edge. The skinning blade is 10 tmies better than the many quality gut hooks I have used.

I don't want to put clothes on a deer in a field or anywhere else for that matter.

I carry anywhere from 6 to 8 knives in my bag when hunting. Blades vary from 3-1/2" to 4-3/4" hunting and skinning types. All hold a great edge and are made from ATS-34 stainless. Even though they are mostly for deer, if I run into the hogs, I don't want to have to do any sharpening in the field.

I use my ANSC 307 boning knife for caping, a gut hook for gutting, and a sawzall for cutting through bone. The only important thing is that your cutting edges are sharp.

Havalon is tough to beat for skinning, caping, and European mounts IMO.

I have an assortment of relatively inexpensive knives (mostly Gerber) that I use for field dressing as I typically use a small rock against them to break the pelvic bone.

A portable sawzall at camp to split and quarter carcasses is an invaluable tool.

I'm interested in the Razor Blaze. How do you like it versus the skinning blade included with the Flip n Zip?

I use Davie Boultinghouse Custom knives. Best knifes for gutting, skinning and cutting up game. They are made in Baggs TX. Have lifetime warranty and beautifully well made.

I've got an old Schrade skinning knife I found out on Brazoria NWR one day that has been my go to for general processing. I also have an old Case XX that was my grandfather's that I cleaned up not too long ago, polished and put a nice edge on that I really like - not too big, not too small. My brother gave me a Cucto serrated boning knife a long time ago that has worked very well.

All are great knifes for what I use them for, but I also don't kill or skin nearly as much game as most of you guys.

After reading reviews and having available Cabela's bucks I ordered the Outdoor Edge Razor Blaze. Most reviews have it favorably compared to the Havalon, and I love the Flip n Zip.

Will report back if it gets bloody this year.
