I've been told by an employee in the local store - which has been open less than a year - that Gander tends to price items high and then mark them down on sale - and they have sales all the time. I like their Guide Series clothes and buy a lot of them - on sale.
There's a simple solution to the "won't price match the website" issue. Buy online and use the "Ship to Store" option. You get the online price, pay no shipping, don't pay for the background check on a firearm, and pick it up locally - usually in two or three days and sometimes right out of store stock.
I've bought four firearms from my new local Gander in the last six months. The first I had to work hard to get the price lowered, since it was initially $80 above MSRP, but I managed to get 10% below MSRP. The other three were all priced 10-15% below MSRP - a fair price. Yeah, I could shop around for better, if there was any place close to shop at.
I've also bought lots of shotgun shells, 9mm, .380, and .22LR at the local Gander - all at great to fair prices, and all but the .22LR on sale. Never paid more than $.06/round for the .22LR.
Complaints are not unique to Gander Mountain. I looked for six months to find just the right SxS shotgun in Cabela's Gun Library. Finally found the right one in the Gun Library in Buda. Had it shipped to the new Outpost store in Augusta - a 4 hour drive for me. They never called me to tell me it was in. I finally called them and they finally found it - it had been there for two weeks. Went to pick it up and they tried to charge me the full price on the gun. Took a discussion with the gun department manager and a phone call to the Gun Library in Buda to get it straightened out. As I said - all the "big three" have their own issues.
