Going to the Antiques Roadshow this weekend in Austin with the family. AR's website says firearms are permitted subject to state, county, municipal law, local LE Permitting, etc...

My question is this... Does Austin Convention Center ever allow guns? Are there ever gun shows there? Anything like that? I'm hearing rumors that no guns are permitted this weekend and I figured I'd see what the law says and what the precident is before calling PBS. I want to have my facts straight.

Thanks!

There probably is a city ordinance prohibiting firearms on city owned property. Austin is cool like that

The convention center is owned by the city.

State law bans the city from banning carry on city/county/state property unless it's something like a professional sporting event, etc. So even if there are 30.06 signs, they have no force of law.

See 30.06 section E.

quote:
(e) It is an exception to the application of this section that the property on which the license holder carries a handgun is owned or leased by a governmental entity and is not a premises or other place on which the license holder is prohibited from carrying the handgun under Section 46.03 or 46.035.

I wasn't too worried about CCW... I actually have a firearm to bring to the Antiques Roadshow for appraisal and would be carrying it in a case. Was just curious how that would be received.

Since it's Austin, I would call the PD. I am born raised and live in Austin, and it's nothing like it was thirty years ago...

Since the last legislative session and since its owned by the City of Austin, 30.06 and 30.07 should be invalid correct? Was thinking about checking out the RV and Boat Show today.

In Austin, you're supposed to carry a pink dildo not a ccw...

Got here. No pink dildos. No signage whatsoever either.

This thread came up on a Google search as I was looking for info. Has anything changed in this thread or does anyone have any info on concealed carry at the Austin Convention Center?

I'm going down there a couple days this week, and would like to ride the train down from Leander, so I can't get there and then realize I can't carry my gun.

From the first hit on Google, sounds like it's up to the event organizer.

Quote:

License to Carry Policy
We follow all applicable State and local laws regarding the license to carry handguns in the facilities.
  • Notify your Event Security Coordinator about your decision concerning weapons by filling out the All Weapons-Free or Lawful Carried Weapons Permitted form. It is our policy to allow our clients who lease space to generally control access to the space. This includes any decision to allow or not allow lawfully carried handguns (concealed or openly carried) in the leased space, during the time of the leasehold.
  • Some areas are considered "Non-Public" and accessible to authorized persons only. These non-public areas include service halls, service yards, and department business offices. Weapons, including those lawfully carried, are restricted from these areas.
  • Illegal weapons are prohibited at all times.

NO. No. No.

Do not ever call a PD, especially one in a blue city like Austin. You won't get the legally correct answer. You'll get the answer that an entry level bureaucrat will give you. And I can promise you, they're going to say something like, "its not a good idea" or "guns aren't allowed on city property" or "we don't recommend it".......

You will not get the right answer.

Find the legally correct answer here or in the legal code, or whatever. but whoever answers the phone at APD will not be the person to talk to on this.

Also, carry anyway.

Thanks. That is the same thing I was finding as well.

And to your last point... I don't believe there are any metal detectors.

Don't forget - our terrible AG has released several opinions stating entities who lease public property can ban guns since they aren't limited by the rules put in place by the Legislature to stop public entities from banning guns a few years ago.

Hopefully the Legislature will step up and fix this in an upcoming session.
