Never posted these from about a month ago. As stated Ive been busy and pretty much dissapeared for 4 months from around here.

It had been a while since I had been out bowfishing and it was like getting on a bike...well kinda, after a few misses I remembered the "depth to under shoot" rule

Very nice. I'm hitting the Pecos in a couple weeks and I need a bow fishing rig stat. I'm thinking about picking up a cheap recurve (sammick sage, etc) with an AMS reel. I'd like to get something as short as possible that I could shoot sitting down in a kayak. I've only seen the sage in 62" I believe so not sure if that's short enough to work. I'm kinda stubby from the waist up.

Im trying to get into bowfishing...just recently picked up a cheap used bow. Wheres a good place to look for reels, line, etc? Saw academy has some limited supplies.

Pharm, you can get a Zebco 202 and reel seat on eBay but if you boowfish very long you're going to wish you had just but the bullet and bought the AMS fishing reel.

Pretty cool, but most everyone in the sport violates the take it, consume it law. So far, the wardens don't enforce it that way, and it is legal to dispose of carp like that, but technically native gar should be retained for consumption if taken.

Caveat, rules don't apply to private waters. Tilapia And carps are invasives, so arrow the crap out of them.

I'm killing the next snake I see for that comment.

Is that a young gator gar? Body looks large and snout looks wide but there isn't much for scale.

I would suggest an AMS reel especially if your just getting in to the sport. With an actual fishing reel you'll have a lot of times where you forget to press the button and sling and arrow off lost forever. Plus AMS reels seem to have less problems in my opinion. I had an old bow and got my reel at academy for about $100

I think the AMS Reel retails for about $90, but here it is on eBay for $68.

As for the bow, honestly the older the better. There is a lot less let-off, and a less aggressive valley in older bows (or in recurves) so it's much easier to snap shoot. I'm using a mid-80s Bear. I have a buddy that uses his current hunting bow and he has a more difficult time. Not to mention he has to change the setup on his hunting rig to bowfish. My guess is you should be able to find an old compound very cheap at a pawn shop.

I agree with Sean I use an old Easton/Hoyt and it works a lot better that a newer short cam bow.

This is what I meant when I said I got a reel. I bought the package. Works great.
