How long do you want to ignore this user?
For some reason I'm interested in buying a rimfire for a everyday ride along in the truck gun. I am intrigued by the new .17 WSM, but I really don't like the Savage B-mag. I do however like the Savage 93's (I think that's the right model). I don't think that the .17 hmr has enough to it, but what about the .22 mag? Does it have enough thump to it for coyotes, and if so, in what range?

I love my lever action .22 mag winchester. Tack driver out to 80 yards, easily.

Taking down a coyote with 17 WSM, 17 HMR, or 22 WMR, you're going to need precise shot placement. 17 HMR will have less energy than 22 WMR, but those 17's haul ass and have a very flat trajectory. I think either one will do just fine.

I have a 17 HMR bolt gun and it's my favorite to shoot (I can easily blow a couple hundred rounds each time I take her out). I wouldn't be afraid to take one down with it- I'd shoot it in the head/ear/neck.

Have you thought about a 22 Hornet?

.22 mag is going to be ok out to around 150 yards. The drop is going to be a problem on the .22 mag if you want to shoot at 200-225 yards. I would go with .17 hmr out to 200 on them. Go check out the forums at rimfire central.

I don't know about some of the comments in this thread but the chart at the bottom has some pretty good info.

Also, the ammo is much harder to come by on a .22 mag than a .17 hmr. I don't know why but .22 mag is harder to find than .22 LR right now

I have the 93 thumbhole heavy barrel accuracy is insane!!!1moa at 100 yds all day long.
The two 22 mags I had would not do that at 50 yards thus they are gone.
Starting Thursday Cabelas has the 93 thumb hole with a 3x9 scope on sale for $349 I would jump all over that, you will not be disappointed.
Can't vouch for Coyotes but I killed my last 4 Axis meat deer with my .17 hmr 20 grain FMJ half way between eye and ear instant dirt nap and no mess or ruined meat!

I dropped a big boar this weekend with my .22 mag at about 65 yds (shot in the head). I shot a yote about a month ago behind the shoulder, didnt drop him, but he didnt go far. .22 mags are fun as heck to shoot, but shot placement is key, and thats what makes it a fun gun.

The CZ 455 series of bolt action rimfires allows you to change out the barrels so that you can fire .22LR, 17HMR, and .22Mag from the same rifle. The barrel kits are about $140 from from Midway and you can buy the 455 in a combination set that comes with .22LR and .17HMR together. I just received a CZ 455 FS in .22WMR and it is a very nice rifle (if you like Mannlicher style stocks).

I have a 22 hornet and 218 Bee and prefer both over my 22 mag. Plus they are a lot cheaper to shoot, doing my own reloading.
