I finally got me a dehydrator and I didn't waste any time running some venison through it for some jerky. Does anybody have any other recommendations for it? I'm thinking my next thing to try is bananas.

apples with a little cinnamon and sugar

will you have a garden?

I dehydrate lots of my garden stuff: onions, bell pepper, okra, zucchini, tomatoes, etc...

Bananas are tough to do. Still haven't gotten any to be like what you'd buy at the store.

Realizing you probably don't grow them, but I dry my Pequin peppers in one. You can also dry Serranos and Jalepenos. I constantly have mine on drying peppers.... really handy!

I've never done anything other than Jerky, but here is a pretty awesome recipe I use from Alton Brown.

Brine:

2/3 cup Worcestershire sauce
2/3 cup soy sauce
2 teaspoons ground black pepper
2 teaspoons onion powder
1 teaspoon liquid smoke
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1 tablespoon honey

I omit the honey as I don't like sweet jerky and I add extra red crushed peppers.
Brine overnight in the fridge.

That recipe is for ~2 pounds of meat.

Thanks for all the input guys. txag2008, in a lot of videos I've looked at people spray the slices with lemon juice to keep their color. I'm going to try that, but even then they always say they never end up looking like they're store bought, so who knows.

plantain chips.. yummy. I don't own one, but have eaten them, and they are my favorite dehydrated item by far.

Do you have a mandolin? Very helpful for making thin slices.
My kids love Granny Smith apples. Dilute some lemon juice or vinegar in a bowl, and dip the slices in so that they don't turn brown. Peaches and strawberries are good, too. I like bananas, but they stick to the trays like crazy.

I make jerky all the time with a rack and a fan. No need for a dehydrator.

Mine was a Christmas gift, but you can make jerky in the oven too as long as you crack it

I think they deep fry them before they dry them out.
