Anyone ever come across a Remington Model 7 in .243 caliber with a stainless steel barrel and synthetic stock? I know Remington stopped making them a while back and replaced with the model 700, but the 700s are lower quality IMO. Plus it's almost impossible to get a stainless synthetic nowadays. Gunbroker only has a blued barrel model 7.

My dad has one and I love using it for does/spikes/varmits/the like. It's a great gun for my son when he gets old enough. Just sucks that such a great gun is so hard to find!

Can't help you with the Model 7, but if your search hits a dead end, I'm very fond of my Tika T3 Light Stainless / Synthetic in .243. Bought it with an eye toward my kids as they get older.

Ruger M77/Hawkeye Compact Stainless/Synthetic is a great little gun in multiple calibers and also features a 3-position safety which I much prefer over a Remington style.

Yeah I checked out the Ruger M77 over the weekend. Not a bad feel, but how does it shoot? The Remington M7 is so dang accurate..

Love the Ruger. have multiple from .243-30-06

Make great truck guns, mountain guns, and an easy to shoulder gun in the box blind. I'm a fan.

I love my Model 70 FTW's and think thats the classic american rifle but would rather hunt with the 77 hawkeye compact.

At the end of the day the craftsman is more important than the brand of his tools.....so I'd have no issues choosing the Ruger over the Remington.

With regard to accuracy in off the shelf guns....I use this real life example.

My 1st rifle was a Rem. 788 in .243 back in the mid 70's. To date it has still never been re-sighteed and although it is an ill-fitting, clanking cheap-a&& gun it drives 10-penny nails out past 100 yards. I've also got newer rifles that are touted as out-of-the-box super accurate yet splatter groups over the size of a tea-cup , in-spite of them being considered a premium accuracy rifle. Find a gun you or your boy feels comfortable with and like to shoot and the accuracy will surprisingly follow....!

To be fair, 788's are widely known for their accuracy.

I also think the lesser accuracy on newer models is due to lesser quality craftsmanship. I'll take the older models over the newer ones every time - that's why I'd pay to get my hands on a model 7.

What about the Savage Axis Stainless XP?

I love the model 7.

FYI - it wasn't replaced by 700. The 700 was around long before the 7. Or did you mean the 700 Mountain Rifle? And the mountain rifle has been around since the 80's.

Are you saying they stopped making the 7, or the stainless 7?
They still make the blue 7.

Not sure why you think the 700 is lower quality. No reason it wouldn't be equal quality.

The one you are looking for would be an awesome gun.

I have a Ruger M77 in .270. That gun has never shot the way I wanted it to. My Remington 700 BDL in 7mm mag was shooting 1-inch groups after 4 rounds of sighting in.

Remington is not making a 7 SS now, they are available used if you look around and probably a few NIB as well.

Remington is also notorious for stopping production on good rifles especially those that are popular.

bonfire.....i understand that owners of a 788 will attest to their accuracy but if you hand one to a stranger and let him feel it rattle and shake like a bag of bolts no one would ever believe you could keep one on paper.....crazy gun.

Here is a couple I found on gunbroker

They stopped making the stainless 7

That fluted barrel one on gunbroker is not a terrible price but the fact that it has a fluted barrel will make it heavier to carry around. Kinda negates the whole purpose...

Yeah my last post was a fail. I was thinking in terms of full size vs compact but it all came out totally wrong. Thats what I get for trying to post quickly at work. The fluted one listed is the full size (20" barrel). I'm more interested in a compact. After looking at Remington's online specs, though, the weight difference between the full size and compact .243 is less than 0.5lbs, which is somewhat surprising. Anywho, sorry for the false statement.

The Model 7 is a very nice, well built gun, however are you open to alternatives? Spring guns and Ammo has a T/C Venture compact Weathershield for less then $500 in 243 that would appear to have the features you are looking for.

If it must be a model 7, have you considered buying a blued compact model 7 and having it Cerakoted?

Quit farting around with Model 7's and get yourself an original 600 that's older than you.

Howa Ranchland Compact would be a good fit, excellent accuracy as well.

There's a stainless synthetic in .260 rem on gunbroker right now...I would think if you are patient and keep your eye out, you'll be able to find one.

A year ago I saw one in 7mm-08 at cabellas with a bushnell scope for $500. It had a muzzle brake and someone had worked over the action. I set it down to walk over to the ammo section to see if they had ammo for it (ammo shortage). When I came back, some lucky sob was buying it.

I still cringe every time I think about it.

Thanks for nothing OP ;p
