I have almost had fights with the dumbasses who think the roll with ham, sausage, jalapeno, cheese etc is a Kolache.
I had an office ask me to bring Kolache for the staff and I brought them and people were like "what is this?? I wanted sausage!!" Told them they should have ordered kolbasnek or pig in a blanket!! THEY TOLD ME I WAS WRONG!!!
Hell, I had a roommate named SMRKOVSKY!! I DO know the difference!!

I was in Hruska's in Ellinger last week and their menu actually says kolbasnek for the meat filled items.

When I drive thru La Grange, I buy pigs from Lukas Bakery, located on the town square. Outstanding sausage! Go down greasy, come out greasy.

We call them klobasniky (plural) cause nobody eats just one.

Hruska's is absolutely worth the detour if you can at all swing it. 100 times better than Wiekel's and who cares how high they are. You aren't eating there every day, just enjoy the greatness. Only better kolache that I know of is Kountry Bakery in Schulenburg.

The correct answer to the OP's question is my grandmother's house in Caldwell, Texas. Her's are the best and she used to bake hundreds of them for the Kolache Festival in Caldwell until she burned out 3 ovens in 2 years awhile back. So now she just bakes for family/friends only. Well I guess that doesn't solve your problem, just had to brag a little.

Edit: she makes both. Kolaches and Klobasnek, is 100% Czech. And calls both Kolaches, so don't y'all get your panties in a bunch.

Hruskas doesnt have very good kolaches...very bready. They are just convinient for all the houston to austin traffic.

Weikels in la grange are probably the best in the state.

These two statements contradict each other.

When someone says "sausage kolache" don't confuse them by trying to explain the correct terminology. Its what people have grown up saying, and anyone familiar with concept knows what they mean.

Normally I am a stickler for accuracy, but you have to ask yourself if a reasonable person would understand what they are saying. Yes, they are technically incorrect, but you are the dumbass if you decide to get bent out of shape about it.

If a friend calls Jack Daniels bourbon I might bust his chops, but I am not going to throw a hissy fit every time I hear someone make the mistake.

It's just annoying because it is one more thing we Americans are culturally butchering .

I use it too in day to day conversation so people know whta I am talking about. The bigger issue is that people are missing out on the goodness that are cream cheese or poppyseed Kolache.

Its not about hurting feeling, as much as not being the jackass who gets a boner from angrily pointing out mistakes. Nobody is any smarter, just distracted and weirded out. Casually mention the difference, sure. Get all pissy and try to start a fight over it, not really going to do anyone any good.

I politely inform people that there is a difference, just like a clip and a magazine.
