Anyone know of any available duck hunting spots around Amarillo? I've got a spot this year for duck hunting but sure would be interested if anyone knew of some leases in Moore, Carson, or Deaf Smith Counties. Always looking for something a bit closer to home.

Thanks!

I am going on friday with an outfitter, but I think the good lakes are all tied up by outfitters....

Plus only cows in the panhandle and not any waterfowl.... :-)

^ He's right. Landowners will use an outfitter if they have water and are looking to make money. Duck leases don't work here. There's not enough big water, and you can't depend on a place having water from one year to next.

Thanks, guys. I certainly understand the dynamics of playas in this area as I do farm management up here. I just got into duck hunting and thought I might give this forum a shot in an attempt to possibly find new contacts that could point me in a different direction.

Greenbelt will hold thousands of ducks. I haven't hunted it personally, but I know people who shot a few limits there last year. Public spots are always better on weekdays.

Your best bet is to ask the farmers you know to hunt their playas.

That is how I have my spot this year. I might just have to settle for an hour and half drive.

I live in eastern New Mexico just on the other side of the border line. Went out with Crooked Wing Outfitters during Teal season and had a blast (...literally...) on a spot he had near Lubbock.

I wish there were decent leases up in the Panhandle- I'd be all over it. Public hunting areas in this area of NM are few and far between.

Ducks? I see one occasionally. You know we don't have water up here except in 9 or 10 places.

Seriously though, I don't know anyone that hunts duck here. Geese yes. Geese don't seem to mind the affluent ponds (most of what we have) and they love to eat the corn left or young wheat.

...well now you're just bragging. Just how rich are these ponds?

OP.

you can have good luck with just asking the landowner. If they don't have it leased they have let me hunt in the past for free.

Hard part is finding the landowner.

I would guide you on one but our ponds are fading fast. If we had same water we had in August, I'd have all kinds of duck spots.

Thanks, Doc. Most of the playas I work around sure looked promising in late August only to drop off in September. I was able to scout a few areas today and came across some very promising spots with excellent numbers. I sure appreciate all of the responses.
