You can open carry long guns in Texas, just not pistols.

I fear Texas will never become OC. Too many with the mindset of "I personally would not do this, so nobody should do this".

Discussions on this board alone, amongst gun enthusiasts, make that case.

I love the idea behind what this guy is doing but I'm not totally sure that I agree with it. The open carry debate will always face opposition in Austin, the news, and the internet because of the public's fear of sporting rifles, Aka, "assault rifles" along the way people were raised. I think its great that we can open carry long guns and we should do what we can to retain that right by not advertising it and bringing it to the attention of certain lawmakers who want to take our 2nd amendment rights away.

Yup. This place and ar15.com are two of the most anti open carry places I encounter. The debate seems to have been lost.

Maybe that attitude is prevalent because so many open carry "activists" try to be as antagonistic and shocking as possible.

I wouldn't open carry for a number of reasons, but I do wish Texas would legalize it. Doubt it will ever happen though.

I think that is part of it. Here is a story about one of our nitwits in Idaho. He is an open carry advocate. This slimeball followed a cub scout troop into the Idaho Statehouse after hours with a gun on his hip and then proceeds to rummage through state reps desks etc taking photos of stuff on their desks. Great PR for the open carry folks. This is exactly the point you are making NRH ag.

So as it stands, i can walk down the street in cs with an AR on my back?

Yep. Just make sure not to act like a dick when the cops get called on you. It'd probably be good to know what statute in the Texas Penal Code says it's ok, too.

Just like everything else, they make up a small portion of the pool, but get the most attention.

They are not the problem though. The bigger issue is that even supposed firearm enthusiasts cannot come to any agreement - there just as many that buy into stupid internet myths about open carry that claim they are pro firearm.

And while there needs to be better tact at times, I am not a fan of begging and grovelling public servants for permission to do anything. They work for us, and at times need to be reminded of that fact.

Serious question, how does one open carry without being "as antagonistic and shocking as possible"? In other words, in what situations would it be acceptable for someone to exercise that right and not be looked down upon by you?

Drummer- Carry a handgun in a belt mounted holster. Not too hard.

If you went to starbucks with an AR15 and posted on the internet about it, you are an *******. If you walk down a suburban street with an AK pistol slung over your shoulder, and get mad when the police are called and have to talk to you, you are an *******.

Carry with the purpose of freaking people out, and you're going to get a reaction. It will likely be a reaction you do not care for. Tough ****, that's the way the world is.

Holstered handgun, I could care less. Walking around the neighborhood with an AR (or look like that kid/guy in the video posted a couple weeks ago), yep, I'm calling the cops. Pass muster with them, fine.

I feel like walking around my neighborhood with an AK just because I can and other people don't like my legal rights.

LEO want to stop me for doing the same thing as normal walk? Tough luck because I won't be harassed by them because other people don't understand the law or firearms.

Congrats, you're an *******.
ursusguy
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Understand both the law and firearms, but I don't know you or your intentions. So the cops are getting called.

This thread and the last few responses are a perfect example of just how deep seated the anti gun folks have instilled the fear of firearms, and how antiquated and stupid the tactic and idea is that there should be some sort of shame in OC.

I am pretty sure you are a cop and 2 of the 3 things you mentioned is illegal unless you are on private property. So, WTF is your point?
CrossBowAg99
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Ursus, I believe that the guy in the video is trying to "protest" the fact that the Lege will not pass open pistol carry in Texas. He doesn't really want to carry a rifle, but that is his only option. If enough folks do it maybe things will change one way or another.

Schemlba - You can refuse to acknowledge reality all you want. It will not change things.

CrossBow - Not anymore, and I wasn't referring to Texas laws specifically, just OC in general.

wtf am I really catching flak for talking of doing something completely legal?

sorry you nancys are frightened by a law abiding citizen, that poses no threat, having a firearm!
ursusguy
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Schmellba, I don't fear the gun, but suspicious of people in general (hince my photo collection of unknown cars in the neighborhood, not kidding). In other areas it wouldn't bother me, in my particular neighborhood I'm not going to trust the locals. Simple as that.
ursusguy
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Crossbow, I wasn't talking about the video posted on this thread. I'm talking about the one with the really socially awkward guy the was patrolling the neighborhood.
schmellba99
How long do you want to ignore this user?
That's find and dandy for you ursus, but do you think your distrust of locals in your local neighborhood should supersede me from being able to carry at my discretion in my neighborhood?

ursusguy
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Nope. I was specifically referring (though poorly worded, should have stuck "my" in my first post) to my specific neighborhood. What you do around where you live, that's your business.

I'll add, if you're an adult from houses in the immediate area. I'm not likely to care. If you're carrying near my home, and I don't recognize you, that's when I'd call.--holstered, don't care.

Note I never said I was against it. I've been around it plenty in both Arizona and Vermont.

Ursus makes a good point that a lot of hardcore OC advocates miss. How you LOOK matters. If you're a normal looking guy going about your business while wearing a holstered handgun then I'd venture to say that most people won't notice or care. In fact, they'll probably just assume you're LE.

If you look like you're up to no good, or if you're walking through your neighborhood looking like an idiot with an AR slung over your shoulder, then you're probably gonna get the cops called on you.

It's the "I don't care if you like it because it's
Completely legal and I'm gonna do it just to tick people off" crowd that do more harm to open carry than anyone else. They're not smart enough to realize that, while making their point, they're also jeopardizing their and everyone else's right.
