I went to academy here in the staiche, they had the best selection although not great. Let me tell you what was sweet though, found a model that they only had one left as the demo, they gave me it for 20% off, so I got a $460 or some odd dollar safe with like $90 off. Anyway it has the keypad entry, it is supposed to hold 12 guns. 6 to 8 is about all it holds though. Which I think is the standard. Buy a safe that says it will hold double what you are looking for.

Edit: sorry and I think it's the safari. I really like it so far, has fire protection and what not.

JMHO, you probably aren't going to have a ton of luck finding all that. Electronic locks are more popular on the bigger safes from what I've seen, and you aren't going to go much bigger without going over budget. You probably can find one online, but unless it somewhere with brick and mortar locations that offers free ship to store, you'll probably end up going over budget on freight/delivery.

Any 8-10 gun you do find should have no problems fitting a AK with the mag removed and sitting beside it or some such. If you're wanting the mag in it (not sure why you would need it like this), that may become problematic. Also, the outer dimensions are likely to be larger on a true safe than on a security cabinet, if fitting it in a small space is your whole goal.

Edit: Do hope someone can give you some better help, and actually point you in the way of exactly what you're after.

Yeah it may not be reasonable to expect to store it with the mag in. Ive found a good number of safes on amazon, but the reviews widely differ until you get $800+

whats brands are generally considered decent? I dont need it to be totally thief and pry bar proof, just kid proof.

And yeah, when i say safe, i should probably say security cabinet.

Kidproof, you can get away with any of the Stackon security cabinets, assuming you mean "kid" kid and not "juvenile delinquent" kid. I have the 18 gun model I believe, got it from my dad when I headed to college, and I've seen it hold as many as 10-12, and if someone stuffed it with care and had socks over their guns, it could probably push 16. It's not electronic though, it's a key which most security cabinets will be, which will be a huge pain if you lose your entire keyring with a week to go before hunting season. Ask me how I know.

Looking at Academy a second time, I do see among proper safes the Cannon Safari 14 gun with electronic mentioned earlier, as well as the Liberty Safe Revolution 18, Winchester Bandit 9, and the Stackon 10, all of which are mechanical combination locks. Among security cabinets, they have a very shallow Stackon 8 and a Stackon 18 similar to mine, both keyed entry. All of those are under your budget.

They had a "14 gun" safe at Homedepot that I was looking at last year for around $349.00. It was on sale. You might want to look around Thanksgiving if you can wait that long. There are generally some pretty good sales going on then.

Just got a deals paper from college station wal-mart. They had 18 gun safari safes with keypad for $490...I'd say that's a pretty good deal.
