Cross posted to Travel but thought it might get more action here.

Anyone been up there? Thoughts? The wife and I were thinking about a 3-4 day trip up there in mid-October.

Saw a picture of island green you have to take a boat to get to.

Any "must do's", or things to pass on?

Golf at the Couer d' Alene resort with the floating green. I have never played but it is supposed to be really nice, but it is expensive. The lake itself is very nice so if you are into scenery you can drive around it or rent a boat. I believe someone also offers floatplane sightseeing rides as well. I think the planes may also dock near the Couer d' Alene resort.

Downtown CdA is kinda cool with some restaurants/bars and shops and so might be worth a stop depending what you are into.

I believe there is also a very long bike trail that uses the old bed of a train track as the trail. It is supposed to be nice.

East on I90 are the old mining towns of Wallace and Kellogg. I think they have some old mines and stuff you can tour.

Most of the allure of that area is the natural beauty.

Oh and October weather in Idaho is usually spectacular. Cool nights in the 30s and 40s. Sunny days with highs in the 60s and 70s. Pack a sweater/light jacket and have fun.

The St Joe river, just south, is great for wild cutthroats.

I 2nd what IDAGG said. I go to western Montana every year. Just got back. I always hit up the CDA resort course. Twilight = $120. 30 miles south is Worley. Great golf course and casino. 20 miles to the east is Kingston where the CDA river comes out of the mountains. Good fishing, tubing, biking and hiking in that area. There are also some beautiful drives north and east of the Sandpoint area. I know hunting season starts in September in MT, and it may be the same in ID. That may limit your choices on where you hike, if that's in your plans.

IDAGG...do you live up in that area?

droop5 no I live in Boise but I have been up to CdA several times. I second you opinion of Sandpoint. It is about 90 minutes north of CdA on lake Pend O Reille (pronounce Pond O Ray). Very nice town on a gorgeous lake. Art galleries, restaurants etc and the drive around the lake is great. I would move there but jobs that pay more than $10/hr are scarce.

Wife's family lives in Sandpoint. Great area. It may be too cool but floating the Kootenai River from Montana down to Bonners Ferry, ID is a great and relaxing way to spend the day. Rent some bikes and ride down the Hiawatha Trail just east of CdA. Lots of hiking and mountain biking trails in the area.

Went there this summer and it was one mine and my wife's favorite places we've ever been. We were already planning on going back next summer the day we got back. Its an awesome place. I played golf, she went to the spa, we did the Hiawatha Trail, spent time at the lake, went hiking, the whole thing was great. We never made it up to Sandpoint because we had so much other stuff planned but it will definitely happen next summer.

If you want any specific recommendations let me know.
