Check out this sinkhole swallowing up some trees.

How where they able to sit there and predict that would happen? Was this from some drilling operation

I read about it a while back. I'm not sure if there has been a definitive cause....at first they thought the natural caving in of a salt cavern triggered it. It started the latter part of 2012.

I think there was a storage operations nearby in the salt dome. With respect to underground engineering (and all engineering in general) "nature wins in a tie"

Sinkholes are also a major problem in Florida, where they are becoming increasingly common. According to NBC News, some researchers think that this is due in part to more water being removed from the ground for agriculture and other reasons

You mean 'other reasons' like entire cities being completely dependent on ground water? Seems like it's always those danged farmers' fault.

I farm, but I don't have my head in the sand. 70% of the worlds fresh water is used by agriculture for irrigation. 20% for industry and 10% for domestic use. http://www.unwater.org/statistics_use.html

We in Ag understand we have to learn to be more efficient and do more with less. If Ag irrigation is causing this, the public wont be understanding.

Well the public can go grow their own food and do without any ag products if they wanna beetch about it.

Given La. history of much larger sinkholes when domes collapse I would not have been within 1000 yards of where that dude was standing around.

There are several underground injection wells there operated by Texas Brine. Several nearby salt domes were being used to store liquified butane and this one collapsed and created the sinkhole. I believe it has been going on for about a year. If you want to Google Earth it, look in Assumption Parish near Bayou Corne.

Tree Hugger - yep, that's it.

Go to google earth and hit the timeline.

11-16-2011 - no sink hole. Trees and a right of way

03-12-2013 - 25 acre lake because of the sink hole

Yea... I don't think I'd be standing near an ongoing sinkhole after I saw the Lake that turned brackish from being so big of a sink hole it sucked in a ridiculous amount of sea water.

I wouldnt be opposed to fishing for reds in a lake that didnt use to have them though!

Fairfield Reservoir should have reds stocked in it. They can handle fresh or salt if given time to acclimate.

air, there was a huge die off on Fairfield a year or so ago, if I remember correctly.

I thought reds could live in fresh without any problem, but won't reproduce in it?

Carpe - good point.

The person taking the video was trespassing and had to be rescued when he was swept off the little wooden pier he was standing on my the resulting mini-tsunami.

Looked like a mat road through the mud. I hope he at least had seen some geological studies on the size of the dome, but I suspect not.
I imagine the lawsuits will be dragged out for decades.

I still shake my head over how bad they missed on that salt mine / well debacle years ago.
