Need to do some additional work with two dogs, and my very old/tired shock collar ain't working so great.
Any recommendations for a mid-price unit? Amazon shows great reviews on the Dogtra 1900NCP
($200).

Would not mind having two collars, assuming the transmitters has dual channels?

I limped along with a SportDog for 4 years. Finally bought a TriTronics last year (owned by Garmin now) and haven't regretted it a bit.

I have the TriTronics Classic 70. Think it ran about $320. I know that's probably not mid-range, but it's the only review I can offer of a product I would recommend.

I have the Sport Dog, which I use for some light work in the yard, but the old TriTronics 500 has been great for field training. The new Garmin(TriTronics) Astro is pretty cool for hunting. Combines GPS w/ a e-collar, but it's hard to train w/. If you're talking retriever, though, the GPS probably isn't a big deal.

And on the SportDog, I should say that's it's worked pretty well, but I generally expect it to stop working one day, so I don't use it in the field. It also isn't as sensitive as the TriTronics, i.e. less levels and my dog doesn't seem to notice the lower levels on his flank like he does the 500.

My Sportdog 350 has been great for training my dog around the yard/house. He's not a hunting or retrieving dog though.

Check out Lion Country Supply. They review every product they sell and they have great prices.

+1 for Tri-Tronics

Bought one after a not so great experience with a SportDog.........buy once, cry once as they say.

Absolutely love my dogtra. Works great on my lab and beagle. Every try to get a beagle to live on 30 acres without a fenced in yard? Not easy.

I've used and abused my Dogtra 1900 for 4+ years, having only to replace the battery.

My main goal in life is to find a beer as cold as a woman's heart
