I'm going with my son's scout troop to fish the 1:30 - 5:30 trip on the Cavalier tomorrow in Galveston Bay. What should I expect to catch?

The website says "Red & Black Drum, Croaker, Sand Trout, Whiting, Shark, Gafftop, Spanish Mackerel, Stingray, Angel Fish, etc."

Anyone have links to recent reports? The only reports they are putting on their website are for the offshore trips.

I've already put on my base burn for the year, i should be fine maintaining it tomorrow.

I've done it 3 times. I've caught 2 bull reds, 37" & 38". One of them won me the big fish pot for the trip. I've also caught about a 4 lb gafftop, lots of sand trout, hardheads, and few other smaller drum. My GF also caught a 3' shark. Seen plenty of sharks caught on the trips I went on.

Its a fun trip. Good luck.

When we saw the boat come in from the morning run they had a bunch of smaller fish on the stringers, mostly whiting from what I was told. But they also had four pretty large reds so we were hopeful about a good catch.

At our first stop, I had a fish on the line within a couple of minutes, but sadly it would be the only fish I brought in that day:

A couple others in our group caught some small hardheads that were tossed back, but other than that our group of 24 scouts/adults didn't bring anything in.

I checked the cooler at the back of the boat on the way back in and saw one sand trout, one whiting, and 12-15 gaftop all in the 3-4- pound range. The deckhands all said it was a pretty slow trip.

I don't want to think about the legality of it all, but someone could make a butt load of money selling beer right on that dock. I don't know how your trip was, but every time I've taken that boat, I would strangle a puppy for an ice cold beer right as I get off the dock!

I've been a couple of times. If you go again, take your own bait and gear. Do they still just give u squid? Try some cut mullet for redfish.

I'd spend the extra money and go offshore on the New Frontier. You'll catch more fish.

Yep, just squid.

I wanted to go on one of the offshore trips, but since this was a boy scout trip, we had to do our best to keep the costs down.

Maybe next time.

I can't believe they give you squid for bait. That's asking for an epic hard head trip. Shoulda saved the money and taken them to fish the surf. Popping cork and some shrimp are easy enough. Or target shark. Kids love seeing sharks up close on the beach.

Next time I go on it, Im going to bring my own bait for sure, either store bought or get my own with my cast net earlier that morning.

The first time I went on this trip, we pulled up to the first spot and the captain told us to drop our lines, and as soon as mine hit the bottom...BAM!! I had a 38" red, and I had been fishing literally only 3-4 seconds. The rest of the trip, I could feel the hardheads constantly nibbling on the squid. I caught a few more different fish, but I just couldnt keep the hardheads off my line. The next 2 trips were more of the same, way more hardheads than anything else.
