Went to Cabela's Ft. Worth yesterday and they had lots of .223 and 5.56 and actually some 9mm, .40, and .45

Picked up my 5 boxes of 5.56 and 2 boxes of 9mm only to find out that they only allow 5 TOTAL boxes of rifle and handgun ammo, not 5 boxes of each caliber.

I know Academy has been limiting ammo by caliber, not just 5 boxes period.

I understand the whole restriction deal so that people aren't hoarding everything, but that is really a little over the top IMO to make you decide what caliber you want to buy.

Academy is one box per caliber, max of three boxes.

Academy limited me to one box of 223 at .45/rd and all they had was 20 rd boxes. For that size I should at least be able to buy 2 boxes.

Now, granted, the prices were incredibly fair. I bought 5 boxes of PMC 62gr VMAX at $9.99/box

No complaints from a price standpoint.

Complain about no ammo available
Complain about not being able to buy more ammo

I told you, I understand limiting ammo purchases. But when you're trying to keep up your skills at the range with more than one gun, a 40 minute drive to Cabela's to only be able to buy ammo for one gun seems a bit over the top.

I wasn't trying to hoard ammo by purchasing 100rds of 5.56 and 100rds of 9mm. That's not really hoarding levels.

Yeah, Academy is a max of 3 boxes... not sure what you are complaining about.

Chances are, that if they didn't have that limit in place, they wouldn't have had your ammo still available anyway.

Take the wife, girlfriend and neighbors daughter.

Everyone buys ammo.

Problem solved.

buy ammo, then go back in and walk around for a couple of minutes, then go back to a different register. Or go in right before/after lunch when people are swapping out up front.

I had the same problem at a local gun store, here in San Antonio, when I tried to purchase 2 pounds of powder and a brick of primers. I called the day before and they told me I could purchase both. When I got there the lady waiting on me went and got the powder and primers and was ready to check me out. One of the guys there told her I could only purchase 1 lb of powder and only 500 primers. I told her , that's ok, my wife will by the other lb and the rest of the brick. she does her own reloading. the guy acted po,d but i left with what I went in for.

Ok, the wife is now going with me on every trip to Cabelas.

For a store like Cabela's, it's also a marketing gimmick - because they know that if they continue to have ammo on the shelves, but still have the excuse to limit purchases, odds are you'll continue to come back to the store.

More people waking through the store increases impulse and other purchases significantly.

That's an aspect I hadn't really thought of. Good point.

As written this sounds really stupid. Is is so hard for you to decide what caliber you want to buy?

Given the fact that I'd like to train with both my 5.56 and my sidearm, yes it is a tough choice to decide between 100rds of range time with the rifle or 100rds of range time with the pistol.

Had a friend get told at Academy that they could only buy one box of ammo...I told her she should have asked to speak to the manager.

Was also told at the CS academy that these limits would end when the crazies stopped showing up before the store opened to buy ammo.

Well, it's gonna be a while then. Because according to the Eagle story a while back, these guys have formed bonds with each other; waiting in line at Academy might be the only social interaction these guys have.
Honestly, I don't mind these limits one bit. The day they are lifted is the day that one 'patriot' buys the entire inventory.

Lying... check
Cheating...check
Stealing... I guess 1 out of 3 ain't bad.

I understand the need to limit purchases to combat the hoarding but limiting someone to 20 rds of .223 is absurd, that only gives me 5 minutes at the range. The limit should be for number of rounds not boxes. When they have 50 rd boxes a limit of 1 is OK but if all they have is 20 rd boxes they should let you buy at least 2.

Academy can keep the limits as long as they like...cut off the nose to spite the face.

When they pull their head out of the a-hole, they may realize that there is more to yearly sales than ammunition.

Until they drop the "limit", I will not be spending money in the store on shoes, boots, NFL and college football clothing or decorations, fishing rods, reels, tackle, bait, fishing and hunting licenses, boat rigging, gun cleaning supplies, broadheads, nocks or fletching, bbq supplies, flip flops.....pretty simple, don't ya think?

Good luck with THAT one man boycott.

Txnative, do you think they'll notice? Do you think they would sell more merchandise by never having ammo than people returning to get more boxes the next day?

rationing ensures more individuals can get their hands on ammo. That means more bodies in the store, that means more impulse buys.

So you don't vote, because your one vote doesn't mean anything, right?

Awesome logic there. Hey, if it makes him feel better, that's awesome. But don't expect Academy to change their policy because he's doing that, and don't expect some ground swell movement of folks to join him in boycotting Academy.

And one could also make the argument, that given our current state of both major political parties, that your vote doesn't mean as much as you think it does in the end.

I encourage everyone to boycott Academy, even more so when they have 9mm!

If you live near a Cabela's consider yourself lucky. Houston folk aren't so lucky to live by one. Pretty much have to deal with Academy and Walmart.

DING DING DING. We have a winner. It works out well for everyone but *******s that want to buy up large amounts of ammo, ****ing everyone else over.

Coworker said he was talking to the sporting foods lady at or Walmart. She said the same for or five old guys show up every morning and buy every bulk pack they get in the calibers they own. Then they drink their McDonalds coffee (from the restaurant in the store) and talk politics and the coming armed revolt. These guys are not flipping, they're stockpiling.

She said if it weren't door these guys there would be ammo for everyone. These guys grandkids will never buy ammo once they die.

Don't be goofy, I don't believe I am doing anything to Academy by shopping for what I need at other stores or online. But the internet is a fantastic means to spread a thought or idea.

For those of you who mentioned impulse buys, you are dead on. Learned this working in retail throughout college. There are a number of methods to get people through the front door, and once they are in the door they win.

Academy has ZERO INCENTIVE to lift the restriction, it has very little to do with giving more people and opportunity to buy ammo and everything to do with company profit.

I find it hard to believe so many people would have that much money to waste, to keep buying and buying and buying every single day. It would seem to me their interests would change at some point, or their funds would run out. I guess reselling could explain some of it, but eventually that should dry up too, I'd imagine.

I was talking to a clerk at Bass Pro and he said that unlike them, Academy and WalMart, Cabela's puts their stock our all day long, instead of stocking everything first thing in the morning. I have been to Cabela's twice in the last month in the early afternoon when they had .22 both times and 9mm and 38 spcl another time. I have been once when they had none of the popular sizes. I guess you could buy 5 of these....

If they would just raise their prices to meet current market demand then none of these stupid limits would be necessary. Just do it and get it over with. It is doing nothing but contributing to the shortages.
