I'd be more concerned with how you'll cover it.

sand is sand, man. some is a prettier color than other, but it all irritates your crack just the same.

And keep the neighborhood cats out :-)

Right. The issue is cats, not water. I would buy the play sand fwiw...will be more uniform and less large grains/rocks IMO.

You can get it in bulk by collecting it from texags' collective vaginas over Manziel's tweeting habits

Do a search on silica and sandbox sand. It may be helicopter-ish, but I figured an extra couple of bucks was worth it for play sand versus "sand" sand.

I had this same problem when I built an 8x5 sandbox for my kids a couple years ago. I think the all purpose sand isn't as filtere as the play sand. But other than that, I couldn't tell there was much difference. I think the tree hugger/health nazis will tell you that mason's sand or all purpose sand has finer grains of silica in it that will surely give your kids cancer. But kids have been playing in sand for millenia and I'm pretty sure that hasn't been a big problem.

I went with a couple yards of all purpose sand and didn't look back.

The idea is great, but if you live it Texas, you'll have a breeding ground for black widows and brown recluses on the underside of the plywood. We fought them, but couldn't win when I had one growing up. I do remember blowing up army men and grass hoppers with m-60's in the sand box. Awesome! Then I grew up....boooo

Playsand is a consistent mesh size and likely has an anti-bacterial agent mixed in before bagging.

No matter which one you order follow this important advice.

Dump at least 1/2 of your final amount in the yard before you even put it in the sandbox. This will only speed up the process and allow you to accept the reality of what is to come.

This time next year you will look at the sandbox and say WTF? (bookmark this page)

I might have had 147 sand particles left in my Little Tikes Turtle after one year. They can push around dust and ghost farts now as far as I'm concerned. They now play in an alost empty green bottomed turtle with beach toys. The clean up of the kids when they come inside is less aggravating, and the lost cause is no longer fought for.

There isn't much difference. Play sand is usually a little larger gradation size and washed better, but that is about it. The first good rain takes care of a lot of the fines issue.

Mostly it is a marketing gig - charge a little more because you can.

I actually laughed out loud. Sorry no anti-bacterial agent out there to mix with sand. If you ever went to where this was packaged you would be laughing at this comment too. Also laughing at the "Silica" comments. I think you need to google what sand is, you will be shocked.

The one thing that you want to buy is "sanitized" sand, which basically means it was kiln dried. And for those worried about Silicosis, don't worry. Are you worried about going to the beach?

Silicosis is caused when people are sand blasting or grinding concrete with sand and the dust particles get into the lungs. It is not from sand but the breaking apart of the sand at high pressure creating a very fine dust. This cannot happen from playing in sand.

Sterilized sand is a very expensive process that is very capital intensive. Most smaller sand operators use a batch mixer with a mild disinfectant to kill any staph on the sand prior to bagging. Sand is a very low margin product.

$20 home depot flatbed?

Still a better deal.

I am in the same boat with no truck as of last October.

Why don't you just wait until you have your truck back?

and more importantly, keep the little black kids out so the cats don't bury them.

Buy a plastic sandbox with a lid, and use pinto beans instead. works well, doesn't track, is easier to clean up, and, if you decide to move the sandbox into the house in the winter (provided it's a small sandbox), the kids can still use it since pinto beans work well, don't track, and are easier to clean up. Also, it doesn't attract cats.

We had issues with sand. Went to pea sized gravel. Still some issues, but less than sand.
