.22lr.... hunting small game
9mm... self defense, extremely common handgun caliber, for when your supply runs out
12ga... see above.
5.56.... hunting and see above.

.22lr - cheap, small, easy to stockpile, can be used for many purposes
.45acp - because I like to carry a sidearm, and .45 is my choice for a sidearm caliber
.223 - can be used to take down any game in Texas, and used for protection
12 gauge - can be used for hunting and protection

-.22 lr - excellent cheap round for small game

-12 gauge - versatile for defense & hunting birds & small game

- either 9mm or .45. a handgun is really of limited utility.

- .308 (in the form of an M1A) superior accuracy to an AK, more power than a .556. The best battle rifle if you don't mind the weight & cost.

Then it comes down to AK vs AR. I guess in a true SHTF scenario I would prefer the AK.

These were also the first to disappear this time round. That said, those calibers are my choices as well.

I picked for economy, normal availability, relative effectiveness (maybe not first shot, but follow up shot) and these are the calibers I currently own.

I also have .38/.357 and 20 ga, but use 9/.223/12 ga regularly.

Next choice would be 30-06 because I never saw it out of stock over the last six months.

40mm after all of that!

22lr - hunting/can store the most ammo
12ga - primarily for hunting
.40S&W - preferred handgun for SD
5.56/223 - preferred long gun for SD/ sufficient for hunting

covers most possibilities, except longer ranges. would like to have 308 and/or 300 win as well.

One if the main reasons they are a good idea in a real hardcore SHTF scenario. You need to barter for something? Ammo would be good currency. This is going to have some of the most volume out there.

Also easier to pick more up. But as far as pure usefulness and variance, here is my list:

- .22lr - useful in hunting any small game animals. Light to pack.
- .45 - powerful pistol round with stopping power.
- 12 ga - helps with any airborne game, as well as large enough for SD and larger game with a slug barrel.
- .30-06 or .308 - take down any game in North America from a long way away.

9mm, 5.56 & 12ga.

You can resupply from any police or military vehicle...
