I am looking at these various drop in laser bore sighters - ones shaped like a cartridge... Anyone ever use on of these?

I previously had one I stuck in the barrel, but it was a cheapy version and no longer works. Plus, it wasn't perfectly centered...

Anyway - I see these newer designed cartridge ones... Ranging in price from $8 to $40. It does seem like there are a lot of complaints concerning the $8 ones... Lasers are not centered.

However - anyone have experience or anything good to say about any specific brand?

Well I did a lot of reading. They all seem to suck (this style of bore sighter) for one reason or another. I may just buy another Bushnell one like I had before for like $27.... It worked well enough... Hate to pay that for 1x use.

I bought an Aimshot brand for around $30 and have had no problems with it. I have a holosight on my AR so it is really only useful to boresight my irons.

I was introduced to a rather "creative" way a while ago, but it worked.

Remove upper from lower.
Remove BCG.
Place target as far out as reasonable. Other side of the shop worked for me.
Adjust upper so you can see the target properly through the barrel. Moving your face father back from upper helps with a tighter image.
Adjust optics to match.

Not perfect, but got me on paper at 50, where I could properly adjust it.

This will be for a Steyr AUG - sighting it in that way won't work in this case (to look down the barrel)

Well, I guess it IS possible if I put the barrel into the receiver, without it all in the stock. But, I guess I'll just buy the Bushnell again.

Just start up close (say ~25m) and work your way out. It should only take you a few rounds. Use the $40 saved to buy more ammo.

If you're worried about a stray, shoot the first couple intentionally low to avoid overshooting the target.

I have one of those kits that has multiple different caliber capabilities. I don't think I paid a whole lot for it (maybe $40?). It's not perfect, but it does what I bought it to do - which is to get me on paper, fairly close to where I want to shoot, at 50 yards.

Everything after that is up to me.

What Navernoski said...

The further away you visually boresight it, the better. I have done it at 100 yards, but have a set up in my back yard at 25 yards.
